How long does a mini golf course take to pay for itself?

On our builds, it has typically been two to three years. A course in a good catchment can play 35,000 to 60,000 rounds a year, and the course at City Golf Club in Toowoomba recorded 46,000 in its first year.

The flow-on to food and drink is a big part of it. Café takings at Rich River Golf Club are up 20% since the course opened, and food and beverage sales at The Vines Golf Resort are up 25 to 30%.

Nobody needs to know how to play golf to have a go, which is why the same course works for a family on a Sunday and a corporate group on a Thursday night.

Most venues have a patch of ground that isn't earning anything.

Our courses fit sites from 1,200 to 3,000 m², so an unused lawn or an awkward corner beside the clubhouse can carry a full course without buying more land.

Once it's built, the upkeep is light. Most courses need about 15 minutes each morning to blow the leaves off the turf, plus a brush to fluff the grass up after heavy traffic. Running costs, mostly staffing and course upkeep, come in at up to about $70,000 a year.

Maroochy River Golf Club planned for its mini golf course to pay for itself in five years. It got there in just over two.

The 18-hole course on the Sunshine Coast opened in September 2019 and averages around 43,000 rounds a year. Café takings at the club are up 35% since it opened.

A course carrying that much traffic has to be built for it. We use high-grade synthetic grass and edge the holes with timber sleepers and rockwork, so the course holds up with very little maintenance.

Who designs your mini golf course makes a big difference to how it plays.

Geoff Bennell spent over two decades as a golf course superintendent before he started Mini Golf Creations. Our lead designer, James Wilcher, came to us from Greg Norman Golf Course Design.

You can see that background on the ground. Our holes are shaped the way a real golf hole is, with contoured greens and proper bunkers, just on a smaller scale. A seven-year-old and a low handicapper can play the same round and both walk off happy.

We've been designing and building courses across Australia for over 10 years, and we handle the whole project, from the first site visit through to support after opening.

Drummond Golf Driving Range and Mini Golf has run one of Adelaide’s best-known driving ranges for around 15 years, built for golfers practising on their own. Their mini golf course gives them something groups can book together.

We designed and built the 18-hole course on a 2,500 m² site beside the range. Every hole has two tees and two pins, so a low handicapper and a seven-year-old can play the same round at their own level. The venue now markets it to families, groups of friends, workmates after knock-off and corporate functions.

Comparing quotes for a mini golf course? The cheapest one usually gets cheap in the same place.

Ask each builder what's going under the turf. Base preparation, drainage design, framing material and the turf specification should be written into the scope rather than described over the phone.

Then ask to see a course they built that's been trading for five years or more. Everything looks good in year one.

No clowns. No windmills. No plastic animals. 🚫

The old putt putt courses leaned on novelties to make the game interesting. We'd rather do it with real water features, sand traps and contoured surfaces.

Turns out when the course plays properly, you don't need a fibreglass giraffe to hold anyone's attention.

Our hiring approach is fairly simple. We look for people who are good at their job and who love golf. ⛳

That goes for the team leaders, the foremen and the construction crew. When the people shaping a green have spent years playing the real thing, the holes come out better.

It's the reason our courses play like golf rather than like an obstacle course.

Strong connections with other people are one of the foundations of good mental health.

Mini golf makes that easy. Friends, family or workmates, everyone plays together on the same course, and there's usually plenty of laughing at the bad shots along the way.
