🏉 RFU VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2026

The Awards ceremony takes place this coming Friday the 4th September at ‘HQ’. Following our success at the regional awards held at Kendal earlier this year we are in the mix for a national award.
This is in recognition of the hard work that’s gone into getting the club back playing competitive rugby after several years of staring into the abyss.
It’s been a team effort and whilst it would be great if we could attend en masse we will be capably represented at the prestigious event by the two Ians, Farren and Hanna who have promised not to enjoy the 2 days of free travel, accommodation, food and drink too much!

Preseason Update 🔵⚪️

Fast approaching week 8 of preseason down at Strawberry Grounds. 🏉

Plenty of contact, fitness improvements and ball handling drills. All made easier with hitting 22+ in attendance regularly. 🏃

The lads now focus their attention towards this weekends opening fixture against Carlisle in the first round of the Cumbria Shield. 🏆

The RFU has issued a statement on the start of the 2026/27 season, to summarise:

All league fixtures postponed to the 21st September due to ongoing draught.

This decision has been taken by National League Rugby (NLR), as organisers for the RFU.

To prioritise protecting player welfare, fairness of the game and giving teams chance to plan better.

However, friendly games may go ahead. Based off player readiness, local conditions and safety.

🔵 What this means for Furness:

We carry on our Wednesday night sessions 🏉

Catch up on the free weekends for a chuck about and to keep momentum 🏉

More info regarding our Cumbria Shield fixture on the 5th September will be put out once we have further clarity 🏆

Reidy is currently looking to research and implement a high tech sprinkler system to the pitch going forward, similar to what Twickenham has.

A statement on the start of the competitive community rugby season.

This Saturday the 25th July sees a re-enactment of Barrow AFC's first ever match against Blackpool 125 years ago. The match is taking place at the venue at which it was played, The Strawberry Grounds, home of Furness RUFC and will be played between teams from the supporters clubs of both sides. The aim is to make it as authentic as possible so we can expect long shorts, even longer moustaches and an extremely heavy leather ball! The match kicks off at 11am, entry is free and all are welcome. There will be a presentation after the match after which all will head off to Holker Street at around 1.30 to watch Barrow take on Blackpool in a pre-season friendly. The rugby club bar will be open throughout.

Still picking up the debris from the aftermath of the St Bernard's and Dowdales proms. We seemed to be an outdoor table missing but luckily we found it broken and in pieces tossed in the nettles/brambles!! Looking forward to next year's end of term parties already.
