Pilates Principles - Control 🌱

Joseph Pilates originally called his method “Contrology” which gives us no doubt about what he wanted people to achieve with their movement.

"The Pilates method of body conditioning is gaining the mastery of your mind over the complete control of your body."

He believed that every movement should be controlled and precise. Pilates isn't just about physical exercise; it's also about training your mind to control your body with intention.

That’s why we focus on slow steady movements in our classes.

In our reformer classes we work both against the springs and resisting the pull of the springs on the return of the carriage.

In our mat classes we work on controlling our body movements without the help the springs can sometimes provide.

In studio class we use the Cadillac, ladder barrel and Wunda chair to challenge our Pilates movements further.

All so you can get the full befits of the Pilates method 💚

Pilates principles - Concentration 🌱

This is the next in our series on the so called “Pilates Principles” - the essential elements that makes Pilates so different to other types of movement.

J Pilates himself said: “It’s the mind itself that shapes the body“.

Concentration - focussing the mind on the movement - is the essential element that gives Pilates the mindfulness benefits 🥰

We are still learning about how important mindfulness is in mental wellbeing. But we know that it:

✅ Reduced stress
✅ Improved memory
✅ Increased attention span
✅ Enhanced willpower
✅ Better sleep
✅ Reduced pain
✅ Lower blood pressure
✅ Less anxiety and depression symptoms

All our classes direct you to focus your mind, allowing you to get away from the stresses of daily life.

That’s why people talk about the Pilates zen feeling after class 😎🧘🏻

That’s why we bring the concentration principle to our classes. So you can get the full benefits of Pilates 😘

New schedule starting Monday 14 Sep 🌱

Thanks to the feedback from our wonderful clients we’ve been hard at work behind the scenes working on our new timetable and it’s now ready to launch

We have more of our whole body strengthening focussed class EveryBody on the timetable.

7am classes are now EveryBody except Wednesdays (Stretch), Thursdays (May) and Saturdays (Stretch) and 10:15am Tuesday and Wednesdays are also EveryBody 💪🏼

We will have added 11am Sundays added to a pretty busy schedule. This class will alternate between Stretch and Mat each week.

Saturday mornings have had a shake up with the same classes but some moved times:
7am Stretch
8am Studio
9am May
10am EveryBody
11am Stretch / Unwind alternating

We are also creating more opportunities for parents to move with the Parent Friendly class now all 10:15am classes (except Studio class on Thursday) and 11am on Sundays.

Remember this class is open to non-parents to join, just be prepared for kids to be in attendance.

Cardio classes continue twice a week, and our intermediate-advanced class Strong will increase to TWICE a week on our rotating schedule.

Stability class will join the rotating schedule with one class each week in place of Stretch class Monday to Friday across 7am, 9:15am and 10:15am class times.

All changes have been updated in bookamat so get booking 📆

As always we want to make our studio even more amazing, so if you ever have any suggestions on how we can make it better, don’t hesitate to get in touch 😘

Pilates principles - Breath 🌱

Breathing with the movement is one of the central parts of Pilates exercises. But why is it so important? 🧐

This principle is one of the most heavily focussed on by J Pilates himself. As a young boy in the late 19th century with (most likely) asthma, among other health conditions, he overcame this by physical training. No doubt training breath work helped him to reduce his symptoms.

And this is why we see so many direct quotes from Pilates related to breath.

“Breathing is the first act of life and the last. Our very life depends on it.”

“Above all, learn to breathe correctly.”

Breathing is one of the many Pilates Principles that we bring to all our classes.

Active breathing utilising the diaphragm (one of the main core muscles) and the muscles around the rib cage allows us to draw more air into the lungs. The 360 degree breath allows for more efficient breathing.

It also facilitates mid to upper back expansion, helping release a tight upper back. Having your upper back move efficiently aids better shoulder and neck function.

The focus on breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth also has a scientific basis. Breathing in through the nose allows for chemical effects which create more effective oxygen transfer in the lungs, also producing more efficient breathing.

And process of breathing is intertwined with the movement in Pilates. They work together to bring the whole mind-body benefits that Pilates offers ☺️

But don’t worry if you aren’t getting the breathing “right”! As long as you are breathing with the movement in a way that feels right for you, it’s all good 💚

Just focusing on the breath is key to the meditative benefits, calming the body and giving those Pilates vibes
😉

That’s why we bring the breath principle to our classes. So you can get the full benefits of Pilates 😘
