Just yesterday, our very own Johnny Barnas (yes, the Johnny who answers the phones 😂) completed the The Lighthouse Swim - a 2.5mile open water swim across the Hudson River from Nyack to Sleepy Hollow, just north of the Tappan Zee bridge.
Fun fact: did you know the Hudson River is famously known as “the river that flows both ways”? When the incoming tide from the ocean overpowers the force of the outgoing flow of the river, the current actually changes direction and starts flowing toward the north! This phenomenon is known as “flood tide”.
An unexpectedly strong flood current made this year’s event particularly challenging, forcing swimmers to swim at an angle partially against the current the whole way in order to stay on a straight track across. It’s swims like these where good technique learned and perfected in the pool pays off! Stroke-glide-breathe-repeat!
Are you interested in exploring open water swimming or training for longer swims like these? Do you have young swimmers who want to eventually transition out of the pool into open water? Training for a triathlon or iron man? We can help! Give the office a call and, as long as Johnny isn’t mid-river, he’ll be happy to help!
