Ever seen the "Coaches head tilt"?
A lot of coaching is simply noticing things.

How you move.
What feels different.
What movements you avoid.
What looks easier than it did six weeks ago.
Where something still feels limited, stiff, unstable, or uncertain.

Progress isn’t always dramatic.
Often, it’s subtle.

A squat becomes smoother.
Balance improves without thinking about it.
A shoulder moves more freely.
Someone gets off the floor easier.
Pain reduces.
Energy improves.
A person who once felt unsure starts moving with more confidence.

Good coaching isn’t just prescribing exercises.
It’s observing, adapting, and responding to the person in front of you.

That’s where meaningful progress tends to happen - in the small adjustments, the ongoing conversations, and the ability to adapt the approach as someone changes over time.

MYTH: “I’m too old to lift weights.”

Research consistently shows that resistance training can improve strength, balance, mobility, bone density, and overall function as we age.

As we get older, we naturally lose muscle mass and strength over time — a process called sarcopenia. Strength training helps slow this decline and supports everyday activities like getting up from chairs, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, and reducing fall risk.

Importantly, lifting weights doesn’t have to mean heavy barbells or intense workouts. Resistance training can be adapted to suit different abilities, health conditions, injuries, and experience levels.

The goal isn’t to train like you’re 20.
The goal is to maintain capacity, confidence, and independence for as long as possible.

Go Daryl!

Daryl is taking on Jump for Cancer this July, and in his own words:

✍️“Cancer touches far too many lives. For many people, it is not distant or abstract. It is personal. It affects those we love, those around us, and entire families and communities.

For me, this cause is close to home. My wife has faced cancer twice, so I have seen firsthand the strength it takes to walk that road and the impact it has on everyone around the person diagnosed. That experience has given me an even deeper respect for the work the Cancer Society does to support people and families through some of life’s hardest moments.

It has also reinforced the importance of practical support through treatment and recovery. Our daughter runs Align - Functional Fitness and is a qualified exercise oncology specialist, so as a family we have seen how valuable the right guidance, movement and encouragement can be.

I am jumping to help raise awareness, support the work of the Cancer Society, and stand with the many people whose lives are affected by cancer every day.”

We're hiring! Exercise Specialist / Coach (Afternoon–Evening Focus)
Align Functional Fitness – Richmond, Nelson

We’re looking for a coach who values structure, intention, and meaningful client relationships - and who is available to support our growing afternoon and evening clientele.

About Align
Align Functional Fitness is a coach-led exercise hub designed for people who have never quite found their fit in traditional gym environments.

Our members value:
Guidance over self-navigation
Structure over chaos
Long-term health over short-term intensity

We work with:
Adults new to exercise or returning after time away
Busy professionals wanting structured support
Individuals with injuries, health conditions, or specific needs

The Role
We are looking for a coach to be available approximately 25 hours per week, primarily across late morning, afternoon, and evening sessions (up to 7:30/8pm).

What You’ll Be Doing
Delivering 1:1 and small group coaching sessions
Guiding clients through structured, individualised programmes
Supporting clients with technique, confidence, and consistency
Writing and updating programmes using our coaching systems
Contributing to a calm, professional, and supportive environment

Requirements
Relevant qualification in exercise
2 years+ Experience in the industry
Strong coaching and communication skills
Availability for afternoon and evening sessions (essential)

Strength training recommendations have evolved.

Not dramatically - but importantly.

The latest guidance from the American College of Sports Medicine reinforces something we see consistently:

There isn’t one perfect way to train.

What matters most is:
• the right level of challenge
• consistency over time
• and an approach that can adapt to the individual

You don’t need to push to your limit every session.
You don’t need to follow rigid rules.

Progress tends to come from having structure -
and making the right adjustments along the way.
