“My thyroid labs are normal…”
But are your cells actually getting and USING thyroid hormone properly?
This is where so many people get confused.
Most thyroid testing only measures what is floating around in the blood, not what is actually happening inside the cell, where thyroid hormone does its real work.
Think of the blood like the highway.
Thyroid hormone travels through it, but the destination is the cell.
For thyroid hormone to raise metabolism, improve energy, support hormones, digestion, mood, temperature, hair growth and recovery, T3 has to actually ENTER the cell and bind to the receptor properly.
The problem is, stress changes this.
When the body is under chronic stress, poor sleep, under-eating, excessive exercise, inflammation, trauma, illness, low blood sugar or high cortisol states, the body can start producing more reverse T3 (rT3).
Reverse T3 is essentially an inactive form of thyroid hormone.
It can sit on the same receptor sites as active T3, almost like a “blocker”, reducing thyroid activity at the cellular level.
So someone can have “normal” thyroid blood tests, yet still experience:
Fatigue
Brain fog
Weight gain or inability to lose weight
Hair loss
Anxiety
Cold hands and feet
Poor recovery
Low motivation
Constipation
Hormonal dysfunction
Fluid retention
Low body temperature
Another important piece is TSH.
Many people are told TSH alone determines thyroid health, but TSH is simply a signalling hormone from the pituitary. It does not tell the whole story.
Chronic stress and elevated cortisol can actually suppress TSH, creating the illusion that thyroid function is “fine”, while metabolism is still struggling underneath.
The body is incredibly adaptive.
In stressful periods it may intentionally slow metabolism down to conserve energy and protect survival.
This is why healing often requires more than just “checking labs”.

Symptoms
Stress load
Sleep
Nutrition
Blood sugar stability
Recovery
Body temperature and pulse
Hormones
Digestion
Lifestyle and training load
Health is not just numbers on paper.
