Coaching isn’t a one size fits all

The systems / methods / strategy / science or whatever you want to call it, might be the same.

You apply the science and you’ll get the result.

But coaching isn’t just about the science.

It’s how you apply the science to the athlete.

Every single athlete is different, and needs a different approach.

And the best coaches are the ones who know how to apply the science in the best manner for the athlete.

They get to know their athlete and what makes them tick.

How to best balance the training with their life.

When they need an arm around them, and when they just need to be told to step it up a gear.

The best coaches bring the best out of the athlete.

Coaching is a mindset game more than a fitness one.

As Sam said in this video, he’d worked with other coaches in the past, but he never saw progress/results

That won’t be all down to the science used by the coach…

It’ll also be down to the level of coaching behind it.

Spending 11 months in the HPA has bought the best out of this man.

Not just physically, but mentally too, bleeding into all areas of his life.

Achieving goals he never thought he’d able to.

Building a strong high performing mindset as well as body.

So proud of him and the levels he’s achieved.

Keep walking the walk mate .doughty21._

Ask yourself this question…

What am I gaining by doing this Sim months out from my next race?

Because a Hyrox sim doesn’t build fitness.

It might well be fun on surface level. But you need to be smart enough to know it offers little value when aiming to move the needle.

There’s a time and place to do that test.

Don’t get pulled in by the urge to scratch an itch and put yourself in the bin.

Every training session you do should have its purpose.

It should have a clear training signal you’re aiming for.

It should have its progression ready for the following week.

That’s structured training that moves the needle.

Not random sessions that just cause chaos and keep you stuck where you are.

Stick to the plan, not the feeling.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve discovered how much mental toughness dictates how far I can push myself.

The body will only ever push as far as the mind can go.

A stronger mind = a stronger athlete.

Remember this post next time the workout or race gets tough 👊🏻

Mind over matter 🧠

Couple of weeks ago you may of seen my post about crashing out of an interval session.

I said I’d document the lesson and show you the results, and this is it.

A lesson that you shouldn’t always chase times and instead train for the intended training effect.

Because when you do that, and develop the right energy systems in order, the times will improve as a result.

This again underlines the importance of having the support, guidance and knowledge of coaching to help make these decisions.

Keep putting the pennies in the machine.

Stacking the wins.

Trusting the process and letting the progress take care of its self.

Tonight’s run was a special one.

An easy “zone 2” 10km on paper…

3 years ago a zone 2 run used to be an avg. 5:30 min/km pace.

Tonight I cruised along in the sun at an avg. of 4:44 min/km.

Even with a few Welsh hills thrown in the mix.

You won’t see progress every day, but it’s days like today where you get a little glimpse and reminder of how far you’ve come.

This run was a showcase of years of consistency compounding.

1,000’s of KM’s pounding the pavement, track, treadmill

There really are no shortcuts.

Just because you see someone else setting good times at Hyrox or in a 10km race, doesn’t mean they’ve done that with 8 weeks of training.

You need to stop thinking in weeks and start planning for years.

If you’re going to set goals, be willing to do the work.

Don’t skip workouts, don’t go off plan, don’t wing the process…

Because every workout has its purpose, and is a piece of the jigsaw.

And the jigsaw won’t ever get completed if you skip workouts or don’t follow the plan.

Focus on the process and let the progress take care of its self.

Hard work pays off.

That humbled disappointed feeling you felt in your last race?

Is probably because you did the opposite to this post.

A training week littered with easy runs, threshold runs, Vo2 max work, lung busting Hyrox class’s and a strength session or two.

A s**t ton of signals just all bouncing off eachother, resulting in nothing.

That’s why I don’t believe in Hyrox group programmes in order to truly make you better at this sport.

You need smart structured specific 1-2-1 coaching that’s based on where you currently stand and where you need to go.

Following a £30 group programme will only take you so far.

Fitness isn’t a one size fits all approach.

And it also doesn’t appear overnight.

It’s a constant game of test, develop, refine, improve, re-test.

Periodised structured training based on the data.

It’s a never ending game to say the least.

But that’s where the fun is.

A ladder with an unlimited amount of steps.

Be in it for the long game, because that’s where the glory lies.
