A much loved player and friend of Wigan RUFC who will be greatly missed. RIP Taffy ❤️❤️

Passed away Saturday 22nd August 2026, and of Haigh.

Funeral service to be held Friday 18th September 2026 at St David’s Church at 12.00pm. Followed by committal at Charnock Richard Crematorium at 1.30pm.

Donations in memory of David to ‘Kendal Mountain Search and Rescue Team’, care of the family.

Everyone is welcome to join David’s family following the service at Wigan Rugby Union Football Club, Wingates Road, Wigan WN1 2SJ

Wigan RUFC would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Sir Billy Boston, following the sad news of his passing.

A true Wigan sporting legend, Billy’s impact on rugby and the town of Wigan will never be forgotten. Although best known for his incredible career in rugby league, Billy also had strong rugby union roots, beginning his playing career in Cardiff.

Our thoughts are with Billy’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

Rest in peace, Billy 🤍

Today we mourn the loss of a true sporting icon, Sir Billy Boston, who has passed away surrounded by his family.

Rugby League’s first knight, a Wigan legend, and "Everybody's Hero," his legacy on and off the field will endure for eternity.

Rest in peace, Sir Billy. 🍒⚪️

David 'Taff' Makin

This weekend we very sadly lost a long standing club member, ex player and friend to all.

David/Taff/Taffy started his rugby journey at Wigan in the 1970's, firstly playing junior rugby before progressing to colts and then on to senior rugby in his late teens.

Taff played in promotion and cup winning sides throughout the 80's and 90's as well as representing Lancashire Colts. He also had a spell on the Lancashire Colts Coaching Team.

Taff was a key member of the team in the famous win at Orrell when he chipped in with a sensational try.

After retiring from Rugby, Taff found another love, the Lake District. He enjoyed biking, fell running, canoeing and walking. He was a founder of the famous Lakeland 50 and Lakeland 100 runs, planning routes for each race.

Taff was often found on the sidelines at Douglas Valley, with his good friends Cyril, Rowly and Darren. He could be called upon for a sensible word regarding rugby or any topic of choice.

In 2024, Taff joined the procession to Twickenham to watch his beloved club compete in the National Cup Final. A day he would describe as one of the best moments of his life.

Taff will be missed by his many friends and all associated with Wigan RUFC. The side of the dugout will never be quite the same.

Our love and thoughts go out to all of his friends and family, especially to his beloved wife, Janet.
