𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁! 🤿

Tony joined one of our recent 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 & 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗴 sessions here at Dive Rutland and had the opportunity to try a number of different wings and configurations.

After getting in the water and trying them for himself, Tony found that he really liked the 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘆𝗼𝗻 setup.

And now, he’s gone from trying one to owning his very own:

This is exactly why we run our Backplate & Wing sessions. What looks great on paper doesn't always feel the same in the water, and having the opportunity to try different options can make a huge difference when deciding where to spend your money.

⚓ 𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗔 𝗙𝗟𝗢𝗪 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳 – 𝗗𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗢 𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬🤿

There are wreck dives… and then there is 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄.

Hidden away in the Orkney Islands, Scapa Flow is home to one of the most remarkable collections of historic warship wrecks anywhere in the world.

In 1918, following the end of the First World War, the German High Seas Fleet was interned in Scapa Flow. 𝟳𝟰 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 lay at anchor while the politicians decided what would happen to them.

Then, on 𝟮𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟵𝟭𝟵, Admiral Ludwig von Reuter gave the order.

The ships began to sink.

Battleships. Cruisers. Destroyers.

Within hours, 𝟱𝟮 𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄.

Over the following decades, many were salvaged. But some remain — and these are the wrecks we go to Scapa Flow to dive.

Imagine descending through the clear northern waters and seeing the enormous hull of a German battleship emerge from the darkness.

Standing beside a massive gun turret.

Swimming over armour plate that once protected a warship.

Looking into machinery spaces and seeing details that have survived more than a century underwater.

And then, between the dives, you're back aboard 𝗠𝗩 𝗛𝘂𝘀𝗸𝘆𝗮𝗻, discussing what you've just seen and wondering what the next dive will reveal.

This is what makes Scapa Flow special.

A 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗼𝗯 𝗢’𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗸𝗲, who has now been awarded his 𝗦𝗦𝗜 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 rating! 👏🤿

This is a significant professional milestone and certainly not one that is achieved overnight.

To achieve the SSI Divemaster Instructor rating, Rob has had to progress through his professional pathway from SSI Open Water Instructor to SSI Advanced Open Water Instructor, become a Science of Diving Instructor, and then go on to issue a total of 30 diver certifications across different courses.

That’s no mean feat — particularly when you work shifts and can’t always be available when students are training.

But Rob has continued to develop, teach and support our students whenever he can, and this award is very well deserved.

Rob has been an important part of the Dive Rutland team, and we’re incredibly pleased to see his hard work and commitment recognised with this latest professional rating.

Massive well done, Rob! 👏👏

A huge congratulations to 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁, who completed their 𝗦𝗦𝗜 𝗪𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 with us this weekend!

But that got us thinking…🤔

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀?

In wreck diving, a belay is used to help 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, providing an additional point of support and helping keep the line where it needs to be.

It’s one of those skills that might not sound particularly exciting until you’re actually inside a wreck and realise just how important good line management is.

Mark and Matt have now had the opportunity to practise these skills under the supervision of our instructors — building the knowledge, technique and experience they need to take their wreck diving further.
