Last Saturday the Hipe team were competing at the Highland Games yet again, this time at Airth Highland Games taking part in the 13.5 & 14.5 stone Scottish championships as well as in the open category. Our Wrestlers took falls and wins from far more experienced wrestlers and we are very proud of their efforts.
We may be the youngest club on the field, but we’re also improving the fastest.

Eight weeks ago, many of the people in this video had never wrestled before.

Over the last eight weeks they’ve learned the fundamentals of freestyle wrestling, built confidence, challenged themselves, and become part of a brilliant group of people.

Whether your goal is to get fitter, learn a new skill, compete, or simply try something completely different, everyone starts somewhere - and this group is proof of how much you can achieve by showing up consistently.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and made this such a fun course. Watching your progress over the last eight weeks has been a pleasure, and we’re looking forward to seeing how your wrestling continues to develop.

Last month we had the pleasure of welcoming Thomas Watson to HIPE for a freestyle wrestling seminar.

Thomas has enjoyed an exceptional wrestling career, including becoming a Scottish & British Freestyle Wrestling Champion, Scottish & British Backhold Wrestling Champion, Commonwealth Championship Bronze Medallist, Commonwealth Games competitor and European Championship competitor.

Rather than trying to cram in dozens of techniques, Tam focused on developing a handful of high-percentage single-leg attacks in real depth. What really stood out wasn’t just the techniques themselves, but the emphasis on timing, intent and explosive movement - helping everyone understand not only how to finish takedowns, but why each detail mattered.

To round off the evening, Tam stepped onto the mats and wrestled with the members himself, giving everyone the opportunity to experience those concepts against someone who’s competed at the highest level.

At HIPE, we’re committed to exposing our members to a wide range of coaching styles and wrestling philosophies. Bringing outstanding guest coaches into the club is a huge part of that, and we’re incredibly grateful to Tam for sharing his knowledge and experience with us.

☀️ HIPE SUMMER BBQ ☀️

Join us on Saturday 11th July for an afternoon of great food, good company and plenty of wrestling at The Meadows, Edinburgh!

We’re teaming up with Edinburgh Sumo Club for a relaxed summer social where everyone is welcome. Whether you’re a current member, have trained with us before, are thinking about giving wrestling a go, or just fancy coming along for a BBQ and meeting some friendly people, we’d love to see you there.

Throughout the afternoon there’ll be opportunities to get involved with:
🤼 Scottish Backhold Wrestling
🤼 Freestyle Wrestling
🤼 Sumo Wrestling

Or, if you’d rather, just bring a chair or blanket, enjoy some food and soak up the atmosphere. Friends, partners, children and family members are all very welcome too.

There is no cost to attend – just bring whatever you’d like to eat or cook on the BBQ, and if you fancy getting involved, wear something comfortable that you don’t mind moving around in.

What a way to start the 2026 Highland Games season. 💪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We’re incredibly proud of the Hipe team after Saturday’s Ceres Highland Games. We made up around half of the wrestlers on the field, but what impressed me most wasn’t the numbers - it was the way everyone supported each other throughout the day.

From experienced wrestlers helping newcomers, to teammates travelling along just to cheer everyone on, it was exactly the kind of community we’re trying to build.

A special congratulations to Poppy Dunn, who put in a fantastic performance to become the 2026 10½ Stone Scottish Backhold Wrestling Champion. An incredible achievement and one that’s thoroughly deserved.
