CLIENT SPOTLIGHT | Meet Huxley ๐Ÿ‘‹

For Huxley, one of his biggest goals is to gain as much mobility and independence as possible so he can continue doing something thatโ€™s important to him โ€” working on the family farm. ๐Ÿšœ

Since starting at FSWC, Huxley has been working hard toward that goal and has made progress in several areas, including:

๐Ÿ’ช Increased muscle activation below his level of injury
๐Ÿง Improved core function for greater seated and standing stability
๐Ÿ™Œ Increased upper-body strength to support safe transfers

Huxley says he enjoys all the exercises that are part of his program, but a couple of favourites stand out โ€” standing and riding the spin bike! ๐Ÿšฒ

With his goals in mind, Huxley continues to put in the work each session, building on his progress and working toward greater mobility and independence. Take a look at what heโ€™s been up to!

September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month.

When FSWC first opened its doors, our focus was on supporting individuals living with spinal cord injuries. While we've grown over the past 16 years to serve people with a wide range of neurological conditions, supporting the SCI community continues to be an important part of what we do.

This month, we're recognizing the strength, resilience, and accomplishments of those living with spinal cord injuries while raising awareness about the importance of rehabilitation, accessibility, and inclusion.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT | Meet Gerry ๐Ÿ‘‹

You may recognize Gerry from some of our posts around FSWC โ€” but today, we wanted to share a little more about his journey and just how far heโ€™s come.

After experiencing a stroke, Gerry came to FSWC using a wheelchair. One of his biggest goals was to regain his ability to walk.

Since then, Gerry has made some incredible progress. Today, he can:

๐Ÿ’ช Stand from seated independently
โš–๏ธ Maintain standing balance
๐Ÿšถ Walk with or without a cane
๐Ÿชœ Navigate stairs and get in and out of his house
๐Ÿ‘• Complete most of his dressing independently
๐Ÿ  Move back home after initially being discharged to a care home

As Gerry has progressed, his goals have progressed with him. Since he has attained his initial goal of walking, his focus has shifted toward gaining more movement and function through his affected shoulder, forearm, and hand.

And he has some bigger goals ahead, too โ€” getting back to driving and enjoying the activities he did before his stroke, like camping. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

Gerry says it can be easy to focus on where he wants to be next, but looking back helps him recognize just how much progress heโ€™s made.

The goals may keep changing, but so does what Gerry is capable of. ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ‘ Wishing Aidan all the best!

After completing his fieldwork placement with us and spending the summer as part of the FSWC team, it's time for Aidan's next adventure.

This fall, he'll be heading to the United States to continue his education and pursue his goal of becoming a chiropractor.

Thank you, Aidan, for all your hard work and the positive energy you brought to FSWC. We're excited to see all that you'll accomplish and wish you nothing but the best in this next chapter!

๐Ÿ‘ That's a wrap!

Today marks the final day of fieldwork for Abbey and Mikayla at FSWC.

As part of the University of Regina's Bachelor of Kinesiology program, students complete a fieldwork placement to gain valuable hands-on experience in a real-world setting. We've loved having Abbey and Mikayla learn alongside our team this semester.

Thanks for all your hard work, enthusiasm, and willingness to jump in. Wishing you both all the best!

๐Ÿ‘ Wishing Bryce all the best!

This week, we're saying goodbye to Bryce as he heads back to school to continue his education.

Bryce first joined FSWC as a University of Regina fieldwork student before becoming a member of our team in January 2025. Since joining FSWC, Bryce has become a familiar face in our children's program, building great connections with our young clients and their families. We're thankful for everything he's contributed to the team!

Thank you for everything, Bryce! We wish you all the best as you take on this next chapter!

Ever wondered what it feels like to wear a TheraSuitยฎ? ๐Ÿ‘€

Earlier this week, our students got the chance to find out for themselves!

As part of their learning experience at FSWC, they were suited up to get a better understanding of one of the tools we can incorporate into therapy with our clients.

The TheraSuitยฎ is a soft, dynamic suit made up of a vest, shorts, knee pads and specially positioned elastic bands. The elastic bands can be adjusted to help provide support and resistance while encouraging more optimal alignment and movement patterns.

So, how can it help our clients? ๐Ÿ’ช

Depending on each clientโ€™s individual goals, the TheraSuit can be incorporated into therapy to help work on things like:

โ€ข Body awareness and proprioceptive input
โ€ข Postural alignment and stability
โ€ข Practicing functional movements and movement patterns

The important part is that the suit doesnโ€™t do the work for you! Instead, it can provide additional input and support while our clients actively work through exercises and functional activities with their therapist.

And sometimes the best way to understand what our clients experience is to experience a little bit of it yourself! We love giving our students opportunities like this to connect what theyโ€™re learning with the tools and techniques they see being used in the clinic every day.

Have you seen the TheraSuit in action at FSWC before?

Brandon competed at the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat last week for golf and came home with a silver medal in his division! ๐ŸŽ‰

Erika and Eli were pretty excited to celebrate with him back at FSWC โ€” and check out that hardware! ๐Ÿฅˆ

Way to go, Brandon! What an awesome accomplishment!
