Strathalbyn Ladies Golf
Ann Semple wins the Winter Season Closing Stableford.
Wednesday 28th October dawned with perfect golfing weather for the 14 ladies who headed out to play a 12hole Stableford competition to finish the Winter Season.
Ann Semple was able to play the 12 holes the best finishing with 27 points. Carol Pelle, Cara Eastwood and Marie Kingsbury each scored 25 points while Gill Keane and Kerrie Edwards had 23. Mandi Vardon and Di Krutli both had 22, Pauline Walkom 21, Jayne Dunn, Jenny Drury and Penny Geue all had 20 and Jo Pickhaver and Mel Johnson finished their 12 holes with 17 points.
Although there was a NTP for the 9th hole, no-one landed on the green. Being a special day, the ladies had another NTP on the 17th with their second shot. Carol Pelle won that one with a lucky second shot that bounced off a tree and finished 15 cm from the hole. Mandi scored a birdie while Ann had a monster gobbler on the 1st hole – 30m as she was halfway down the hill when she hit.
Captain Penny had special prizes for some of the ladies.
A group she called ‘The Fairway Faithful’ won the award for the most games played in the Winter Season. They were Ann -25 games, Marie and Pauline 23 games.
Mel Johnson won the most NTP’s over the year with 8 – 5 on the 9th and 3 on the 17th. Ann was runner-up with 5 - 1 on the 9th and 4 on the 17th.
Kerrie won a spare wheel as hers fell off on the 1st hole on one round. Jayne won an Occhi strap and belt so she can attach her buggy to herself, Mandi won a snorkel for helping Jo and Jo won a bathing cap for the next time she needs to go in the dam.
The ladies then held their End of Season Nomination meeting of the Strathalbyn Sub Committee. In the Election of Office Bearers, Madeline Fletcher continues as Patroness, President/Chairperson is Marie, Secretary/Note Taker is Carol, Captain is Penny, and Vice-Captain is Mandi.
To complete the day, the ladies made their way to Finniss General Store for a delicious meal so those who didn’t play well went home satisfied with a full tummy at least.
Ann and Penny recently represented the club at Links Lady Bay for their Charity Day. They had a good time although no prizes came their way.
On Friday 30th October, the ladies of the Strathalbyn Club hosted the Zone Appreciation Day where members from clubs in the Southern Zone played a 9hole Stableford competition before a meal and their AGM. Thank you to Mel and Jayne for providing the delicious lunch of tacos and fruit platter and for Sue Pryor, Tonya Merritt, Marie and Jenny for making biscuits and slices. All was greatly appreciated and the many good compliments need to be passed on. Thank you, ladies. Thank you to Pete Drury who ran the bar for the ladies.

Strathalbyn Ladies Golf
A win for Marie Kingsbury with 38 points.
Fifteen ladies played a Stableford competition on Wednesday 21st October. In perfect golfing weather, Marie Kingsbury showed the way with a fantastic score of 38 points. She was followed by Penny Geue with 36. Not too far behind was Di Krutli on 35, Shelley Handke with 34 and Ann Semple and Gill Keane both with 33 points. Cara Eastwood finished with 32, while Jo Pickhaver and Jenny Drury both with 31 were next in line. Carol Pelle and Sue Pryor both finished on 30 points, Tonya Merritt and Pauline Walkom had 28 each, Kerrie Edwards scored 27 and Jayne Dunn completed the round with 21 points.
NTP with her drive on the 9th hole was Jenny while Di scored a birdie/gobbler on the same hole and this was after another gobbler on the 5th hole. Great lining up both of you.
Trees provided entertainment for some of the ladies on the day. Results were both positive and negative with ‘Oh no’ and ‘Ooh yay’ as reactions due to the balls finishing positions – under the tree, next to the tree or back on the fairway!!
The ladies were trying to imagine Marie’s score if she had not had a mishap on the 7th or 16th hole. One of her shots ended up on the dam edge. That was the lucky part of the hole. Unfortunately, she took 5 shots to get it out of the rough ending in a blowout hole for her. Ann had her heart in her mouth as she skimmed over the creek, just making it to the other side. Although Di had a couple of great shots to provide her with gobblers and a birdie, she had a wayward drive that ended up on the steep bank of the dam on the 14th hole. Tricky shot out for her!!
Yes, ducks and ducklings were once again seen on the course. It has been a great year for the wood ducks out on the course. The group of 16 had amalgamated with others making a large group of 24 that were counted trekking across the fairways. A couple of other groups were seen with young ducklings. Near the club house garden, some of the ladies spotted a young sleepy lizard lazing in the sun before it made its way back into the garden.

Strathalbyn Ladies Golf
Mandi Vardon and Shelley Handke win the Pinehurst competition.
In great golfing weather, 16 ladies headed out on Wednesday 14th October to play a Pinehurst competition. This involves playing in teams of two and both driving from the tee. The players play their partners tee shot and then play alternate shots from the best second shot. Sounds complicated but it all works out in the end.
Mandi Vardon and Shelley played the best finishing with a 70.25 nett. Next in line were Nikki Alves and Carol Pelle with 74.87. Unbelievably there were two groups who, once their handicap had been subtracted from their gross scores, finished on the same score. Visitor Karen Pym and Claire Methven and Kerrie Edwards and Gill Keane finished with 76.25. Penny Geue and Ann Semple were next with 78.87, followed by Marie Kingsbury and Pauline Walkom on 83.5. Jo Pickhaver and Sue Pryor scored 85.5 and Jenny Drury and Jayne Dunn completed their round with 88.87.
NTP on the 17th hole with her second shot was Shelley while Jayne had a gobbler on the 3rd hole. The combination of Nikki and Carol had a birdie on the 14th hole. The ladies welcomed visitor Karen Pym who knows Claire and Jayne.
Mums and joeys were out during the first 9 holes and there are now 3 groups of ducklings. There are 2 lots of 4 young ones and the larger group of 16 still moving around the course, nibbling here and there.
Stories from the day include the group including Mandi, Shelley, Nikki and Carol having fun on the 16th hole. Carol, Shelley and Mandi all hit the big gum in the middle of the fairway with their second shots while Nikki hit the fence near the road but bounced back into the rough. No-one was told of the outcome from the other three. Sue Pryor was very proud. She hit over the creek on both the 6th and 15th holes – the first time for a while. Kerrie had to manufacture a tricky shot after being left under a tree near the dam edge. No worries for her - she got out easily. There were shots that went in the drain and out of the drain on the 3rd, 12th, 14th for some groups.
However, Jenny had the best story regarding her playing partner, Jayne. On the 10th hole, near the top of the hill due to the lovely weather, the fairway drying and a brake that was not engaged, Jayne’s buggy took off. This is not a battery buggy, this one is free-wheeling. Both Jenny and Jayne tried running after it but to no avail. Jayne retrieved her buggy from the drain at the bottom of the hill in amongst the trees on the right. No water luckily for her!!
To finish the day, the ladies celebrated Marie’s birthday with delicious muffins made by Jayne. Happy Birthday Marie!!
