Heartfelt gratitude to our incredible sponsors who showered us with exceptional care last Friday at the ladies' gala day - your invaluable support truly makes a difference.

31/05/2026

It's been a challenging day for our teams, as both pennant teams experienced losses despite putting up a valiant effort. The C2 team travelled to Echunga to face Nairne and suffered a defeat with a score of 5.5 to 1.5. Meanwhile, our B1 team hosted McCracken in a closely contested match but ultimately fell short with a score of 4-3.

‘Australiana’ was the theme for Strathalbyn Gala Day.

Friday 29th May dawned overcast but no rain for the ladies at Strathalbyn who were holding their annual Gala Day out at the course. With a full field of 68 players from 14 clubs across the region – Echunga, Aston Hills, Lake Albert, McLaren Vale, Links Lady Bay, Mc Cracken, Mt. Osmond, Murray Bridge, North Adelaide, Oakbank, Thaxted Park, Nairne, Victor Harbor and Willunga - the ladies played a Pinehurst competition.

The ladies at Strathalbyn would like to thank the sponsors who helped make the day special for the players – Drummond Golf, Darlington; Bremerton Wines; Coopers Brewery; The Bridge Hotel, Langhorne Creek; Angas Plains Estate; Victoria Hotel; Strath Motel; Vineyards Estate; Daish Irrigation and Fodder; FPAG, Strathalbyn; Wizard Pharmacy and Finniss General Store.

A big thank you, of course, goes to the wonderful team of volunteers who have worked together to make this day happen - from the kitchen and bar to the men at the 6th/15th Port hole and especially the groundsmen who maintain our lovely course all year round.

There were some wonderful costumes worn by the ladies and they made it difficult to decide on the best dressed for the day – Steve Urwins, Australiana jumpers knitted 30 years ago, Indigenous outfits, Vegemite jars, Australia t-shirts and lots of Akubras. However, 4 ladies, Heather Burford, Rosemary Robinson, Helen Miles and Jill Jellett from Mt Osmond went the extra mile to come as two sets of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, the Gumnut babies and Barbara Mynhart from Oakbank had to cope with a redback on her toilet seat as she trailed a little toilet paper from hole to hole!! They each won the best dressed for the day.

The novelty events were won by the following ladies. The longest drive for ‘A’ grade – Helen Pengilly from Willunga, longest drive for ‘B’ grade – Susie Crate from Willunga, nearest the pin on the 17th hole – Jaye Schmidt from Oakbank, nearest the pin on the 9th hole – Vicki York from Links Lady Bay, and nearest to the Vegemite jar – Jo Evers from Willunga.

The Pinehurst Competition winners are as follows.

Gross Pair Winners – Carol Collins and Jo Purling from Willunga – 88/72.25

Gross Pair Runners up – Kirsty Page and Donna Makins from Oakbank - 94/71.12

Nett Pair Winners – Natasha Rees and Janet Holt from Thaxted Park – 69.5

Nett Pair Runners up – Roswitha Abel and Gwen Jones from Willunga – 70.12

Congratulations to all the winners on the day and thank you to all the ladies who participated on our Gala Day. Your continued support helps our club and we look forward to hosting you all again next year with a different theme, of course!!

Stathalbyn Ladies Golf

Cara Eastwood shows the way again with 66.

On Wednesday 27th May, 14 ladies played a Stroke round in great golfing conditions. Once again, Cara Eastwood lead the way, but only just. She finished with 66 nett while close on her heels were Gill Keane and Ann Semple both on 67 nett. Michelle Handke finished with 73, Jo Pickhaver 75 and Pauline Walkom 76. Marie Kingsbury and Mel Johnson both scored 77, while Carol Pelle and Penny Geue both had 80. Maureen Need had 83, Sue Pryor 84, Jayne Dunn 88 and Sue Phillips finished with 92.

NTP on the 17th with a good second shot was Maureen, who was surprised she was still in a winning position at the end of the round. Gobblers (chip ins) were scored by Penny on the 4th, Gill on the 6th and Cara on the 18th.

Maureen lost her phone on the course but went out after her round finished and luckily found it between the 6th and 7th. It had bounced out of her cart as she bumped her way down the path. Sue Phillips drive on the 6th found the ball wedged at the base of this tree. It seemed an impossible task to hit it safely out but being left-handed came in handy. A short poke at the ball placed it in an open spot for her to hit to the base of the green.

Strathalbyn Ladies Golf
Cara Eastwood wins in great golf conditions.
Wednesday 20th May dawned fine and continued in that way to becomes a perfect golfing day weatherwise if not at times, golfing wise!!
Fifteen ladies played a Stableford competition with Cara Eastwood using the conditions to the greatest effect scoring 37 points. Not far behind was Ann Semple and Jayne Dunn both with 36, while Pauline Walkom finished with 34 and Mel Johnson scored 32 points. Four ladies all finished with the same score of 31 points – Helen Lyon, Jo Pickhaver, Sue Pryor and Penny Geue. Mandi Vardon finished with 29, Marie Kingsbury and Kerrie Edwards28, Sue Phillips 26, Carol Pelle 22 and Maureen Need scored 21 Stableford points.
NTP on the 9th hole was Helen Lyon while Kerrie had a gobbler on the 1st and a birdie on the 9th. Jayne matched Kerrie with a gobbler on the 1st but she was more impressed that she scored a par 4 on that hole for the first time. Well done, Jayne.
Many of the ladies had to leave early so they missed the buns for Jo Pickhaver’s birthday. That also meant that stories from the day were short on the ground. Mel found drains and Jo P had varied success with the trees. A couple went straight through them and ended up in nice positions while a couple of others found the trunks at a great rate of knots and ended up in slightly more precarious positions.
A couple of days from our Gala Day, so the ladies are all working busily towards providing a great day for our visitors. Thank you to the wonderful band of volunteers making our course look so inviting and beautifully prepared for the day.
‘Make the putting green a place of opportunity, not a place of anxiety.’

Strong start to the pennant season today. Our B2 team ventured down to Victor Harbor to take on Victor on their home deck. Our boys held strong to come away with a draw. Special mention to Cooper Barker who made his debut in the B grade.
While the C2’s took on Echunga at home in a rematch of last years final. The boys held firm to get the win 4.5 to 2.5. The captain came from 5 down with 5 to play to scrape a half which might be vital later in the season.
Well done to all, and Thankyou to our ground staff and the guys and girls who helped in the kitchen.

Please be reminded the course will be closed tomorrow for pennants

Marie Kingsbury and Sam Bradley having a bit of trouble with that little green ball..2 airies!!!
Gill Kean ‘s good form continues.
Once again our girls were blessed with perfect weather for the playing of the club foursomes. Gill Keane combined with Di Krutli to bring in a winning score by .5 of a shot with a nett 75 They were followed closely by
The consistent pair of Cara Eastwood and Pauline Walkhom with a nett 75.5, pretty close. We had some of our girls returning from holidays to boost numbers on the day. Sam Bradley has been having a relaxing time in Thailand doing all the touristy things and also visiting an elephant sancturary. Sue Pryor and hubby Dave, have had a wonderful cruise from Broome to Darwin and Mandi Vardon has just returned from a fabulous golfing holiday with friends. Mandi must have fine tuned her tee shots whilst on holidays as she reckons she had a monster drive on the 3rd, 239 mtres, that is a pretty good drive. Bet her partner on the day, Maureen Need would have been happy with her partner for the day. Sam Bradley and Marie Kingsbury were having a steady round until the 14th . On their 3rd shot to the green, Marie Kingsbury confidently addressed the ball, then whoosh, big miss!! Partner Sam Bradley then also lined up for the perfect shot, but, whoosh again, two airies girls, Finally Marie got onto the net shot and put it onto the green, only to see it run thru, down the track to the 15th tee. Thats golf. The usual wildlife were out on the course today and a special visitor was spotted, a koala in the trees on the 4th fairway.
No birdies or gobblers were to be had but Carole Pelle had a good drive on the 9th to claim the NTP for the day. Next Wednesday after golf, we plan to have a gardening working bee to prepare for our Gala day.
