A team of four Hampton current and former players has achieved something no other bowls team from the club has before: from a mammoth turn-up of 500 teams, they reached the Last 32 of the Australian Open Fours.
The team of Rob Coulson and Bryan Dickinson were playing with Dan Coulson and Johan Fourie (former Hampton 1 players) and on day one they won all three matches at Robina. Day two at Musgrave Hill saw them win the first match and then were pitted against a team of four 17 year-old future superstars who are in the Australian Pathways program, winning that from behind.
This finally saw them pitted against four internationals/gold medal winners in Wayne Turley, Ali Forsyth, Sean Ingham and Aaron Wilson (two time Commonwealth singles gold medallist) to whom they eventually succumbed (see photo)
Meanwhile John McMillan has got through to the knockout rounds of the Open Singles and will play the Malaysian representative on Saturday at 11.45 am
Next week will see Rob and Dan playing in the Open Pairs knockout rounds, and other members playing Over 60s
If only the weather were better—everyone is getting very wet!
