Quick answers to Common Questions:
✔️ We are open as normal Saturday 6th of June ✔️ Lessons will not run on the public holiday Monday. ✔️ Fees will remain unchanged this month, as June contains 5 weeks and affected swimmers will still receive 4 lessons across the month.

💛 WE'RE ALL IN 💛

Over the past week, our swimming community has come together to create this special display, sharing messages, artwork and reflections inspired by this year's National Reconciliation Week theme, All In.

What has been wonderful to see is swimmers, families and staff of all ages taking the time to contribute their thoughts on kindness, respect, inclusion and community.
Every piece added to the display represents a willingness to learn, listen and be part of something bigger than ourselves.

The theme All In reminds us that reconciliation isn't something that happens for one week each year.
It's about the choices we make every day to welcome others, build understanding, show respect and strengthen our community.

Our display will remain up for another week, so if you've taken a contribution home to complete, or would still like to add your voice, there's still time to be part of this collective piece.

Together, we're showing that when it comes to creating a more inclusive, respectful, and connected community; we're all in.

☀️ WHAT IF WE’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT SWIMMING SEASONS BACKWARDS? ❄️

Traditionally, winter is when many families choose to pause swimming lessons.
The weather cools down, winter sports begin, routines change and understandably - sometimes budgets need adjusting too.

And whilst we always encourage year-round swimming where possible, we also understand that life happens 💙

But here’s something worth thinking about…

Most children only swim around 6–8 months of the year on average.
And for many families, that break happens right before or during winter - often meaning children can go months with very little water exposure at all.

Then summer arrives ☀️ chock full of water exposure opportunities to utilise;

Pools reopen. Holidays begin. Beach days, water parks, backyard pools, boating, camping and family water fun suddenly become part of everyday life again.

So you put them back in lessons..

But because of the long break or delayed start, many children spend most of summer rebuilding confidence, relearning skills or still developing the basics needed to safely and confidently participate in all those exciting activities.

🔁 So what if we flipped it?

What if winter became the season to PREPARE for summer?

✔️ Build skills during the quieter months
✔️ Maintain water confidence year-round
✔️ Continue progressing without long gaps
✔️ Enter summer ready to enjoy the fun with family and friends - not still learning the foundations

Because the goal isn’t just swimming lessons…

It’s giving children the skills and confidence to safely enjoy every water memory Summer brings 🌊☀️

At Shellharbour Swim Academy, we proudly recognise National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June)

A time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how we can contribute to reconciliation in our everyday lives.

This year’s theme, “All In”, reminds us that reconciliation is something we all play a part in - through respect, understanding, inclusion and connection within our community 💛🖤❤️

Throughout the week, you may notice:
■ A special foyer display created by our swimmers throughout the week.
■ Take home colouring sheets
■ An extra focus on kindness and connection.

At Shellharbour Swim Academy, we are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child and family feels safe, respected and valued.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and waterways on which we live, learn and swim, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

You may occasionally notice a relief teacher stepping into your child’s lesson - and we wanted to share why this is actually such an important and positive part of running a strong swim program 💙

At Shellharbour Swim Academy, keeping lessons running consistently for our swimmers is always a priority.
Whilst cancellations are sometimes unavoidable, they are truly our very last resort and never something we enjoy having to do..

Relief teachers help ensure your child’s swimming journey continues with as little interruption as possible 🏊

Some of the benefits of relief teachers include:

✨ Whilst our program itself remains the same, every instructor brings their own unique personality, experience, and teaching style. This helps children become more well-rounded, adaptable, and resilient swimmers. Sometimes, families may even discover that a different teaching approach really clicks with their child!

✨ Relief teachers help lessons continue through the inevitable sick days, family commitments, and leave that all instructors experience from time to time - meaning your child’s skills, confidence, and progress can continue consistently without long breaks.

✨ Relief teachers also support our regular instructors by allowing them time to attend training, and continue developing professionally.

✨ Children learn to listen to and respond confidently to different voices, teaching cues, and communication styles - an important water safety skill in itself.
Exposure to different instructors can help reinforce skills in new ways, which often improves understanding and retention.

✨ It helps swimmers build confidence in unfamiliar situations, supporting independence both in and out of the water.

🏊‍♂️ In our Seal level and below, you may occasionally notice a relief instructor place a swim safety device on your child. (even if they don’t usually wear one with their regular teacher)

A relief instructor has the challenging job of quickly assessing the abilities, confidence levels, and safety needs of an entire class of children who may be unfamiliar to them.

For this reason, safety will always come first!

To safely manage the class, they may choose to utilise safety devices or different teaching strategies where needed - This does not hinder progression or “set a child back.”

In fact, it helps reinforce already known skills, confidence, and water safety behaviours while children navigate an unfamiliar situation - including learning to build trust with a new instructor.

All of our instructors work from the same structured program, progression goals, and lesson outcomes, and our team communicates closely to ensure continuity across every class.

We truly appreciate your understanding and support when relief teachers are needed!

It takes a whole team to keep our swimmers learning, progressing, and staying safe in the water 🩵

❄️ WINTER SWIMMING MYTHS… BUSTED! 🏊

Every winter, we hear the same concerns from families - and honestly, they’re completely understandable; no judgement here!

💭 “It’s too cold.” 💭 “We’ll just take a short break.” 💭 “They can already swim enough.” 💭 “We’ll come back in summer.”
But here’s the truth… winter is actually one of the MOST important times to continue swimming lessons.

✅ Heated pools, warm showers and cosy towels make winter swimming much more comfortable than people expect - And kids warm up pretty quickly when swimming 😉
✅ Consistency matters. Even a short break can impact confidence, endurance and skill progression; especially for younger swimmers.
✅ Swimming isn’t just about staying afloat. True water safety includes confidence, breathing control, survival skills and safe decision-making in and around water.
✅ The swimmers who continue through winter often return to summer stronger, safer and far more confident in the water.

❄️We know winter routines can feel harder: Rainy afternoons.. Winter sports.. Tired kids.. The after-swim change room struggle.

But every lesson through winter is another step towards safer swimmers by summer 💙

So bring on the fluffy dressing gowns, the warm towels, the hot showers and the post-swim cuddles.. we’ll handle the swimming part 🏊

Winter swimming is easy with a little planning ❄️

Our top Winter Swimming tips, and what to pack to keep little swimmers warm and comfortable before and after lessons:

🧥Arrive wearing swimmers under a dressing gown or warm layers
🏊‍♂️Long sleeved swimmers and cap to help insulate the body in the water
🧺TWO towels are a game changer:
• One hooded towel to throw on straight after the pool before heading to the showers
• One dry towel for afterwards
🧤Warm winter clothes and Headwear ready for after swimming
☕And don’t forget to grab a hot chocolate from our Sunset Cafe for the perfect post-swim warm up!

🧣Extra Tip: Pocket hand warmers for a little extra warmth before or after lessons, and a blanket for the car ride home.
