We're excited to celebrate our capoeira kids this weekend! Join us for workshops and roda!

Thursday May 9 - at The Capoeira Spot
5:00-6 pm viola workshop (6-8 years old)
6:00-7 pm medio workshop (9-12 year olds)
7:00-8 pm gunga (teens) and adults workshop
8:00-9 pm teens and adults roda

Friday May 10 - at The Capoeira Spot
5:00-6 pm - VIOLINHA GRADUATION (2-5 year olds)
6:00-7 pm viola and medio class and roda with visiting mestres
7:00-8 pm adult workshop 1 Langdon tennis courts
8:00-9 pm teens and adult workshop 2 Langdon tennis courts
9:00-10 pm RODA - The Capoeira Spot

Saturday May 11 -
10:00-11 am - workshops for adults and kids - Langdon tennis courts
11:00 am-12 pm - workshops for adults and kids - Langdon tennis courts
2:00-4 pm Performance, Batizado and Troca de Corda for viola-gunga (6years old-15 year olds)
4:00-6 pm RODA for all (separate kids and adults rodas)

$30 per workshop or $75 for Thursday-Saturday. Pay at the door. Vamos embora!

Join us! This MLK Day Weekend, we are connecting with the ancestral roots and power of Capoeira!

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial created by African warriors who were enslaved in Brazil and used to fight for their freedom. Today, we practice this liberating art form to honor its legacy and for its many benefits - strength, community, healing, wisdom, empowerment, and more.

For the DC public, join us for a free community classes including intro to capoeira, yoga, and Afro-Brazilian dance to live drumming!

For visiting capoeiristas, we are excited to offer workshops by Mestre Malandro of Filhos de Bimba – Atlanta School of Capoeira, a student of Mestre Nenel. In his journey of researching the roots of his own ancestry, Mestre Malandro delved into an exploration of two founding styles that have influenced contemporary capoeira: Capoeira Angola and Capoeira Regional. He trained at Mestre Nenel’s academy, Fundação Mestre Bimba and eventually chose to dedicate himself purely to the preservation and education of Capoeira Regional. Join us for enlightening workshops covering Capoeira Regional, music, and acro with Mestre Malandro!

4-6pm: Advanced capoeira training with Mestre Malandro (6th cord and up)

SATURDAY
12-2 pm: Community class for the DC public: FREE Yoga with D Yoga Dude, Intro to Capoeira, Capoeira Demo, and Afro-Brazilian Dance to live drumming

2-6 pm: Capoeira Regional Workshops and Roda with Mestre Malandro, for capoeiristas

SUNDAY
1-3pm: Capoeira Acro Workshops with Mestre Malandro, for capoeiristas

Each month, we celebrate a member of The Capoeira Spot community!

This month, we are spotlighting Khari, who is both a capoeira parent and student AND who recently received his apelido, Nego Gato. Congratulations, Nego Gato!

Khari has been with the community for 8 years as a supportive parent to his three children. In the last year, Khari has taken capoeira to be his own passion.

When asked what kept you coming to The Capoeira Spot, Khari responded,

“Once my kids decided they liked it, I was here all the time and I just fell in love with the community and the movement. There is also certainly a physical aspect to it. I have found that in my life the way I was moving my body wasn't serving me so capoeira gives me a different type of movement that I think will help me age gracefully.”

As Khari spent a lot more time here, he realized that he liked this place. Khari said “When I first came, I was just a consumer. It was a place for me to bring my kids and have them participate in an activity they liked. But the longer we stayed the more we started to appreciate the community for what it is and what it does for us and for what everybody does for each other.”

Khari's favorite thing about The Capoeira Spot is “the community and the way that everyone relates to everyone. People are kind to one another, it's more than just a place to train, it's a place for everyone to commune with one another.”
