Yesterday I had a conversation with one of my clients that perfectly sums up fat loss.

He’s 83 years old and over the last month and a half he’s lost 7 pounds.

So I asked him what the biggest thing he changed was.

His answer?

“Honestly Mike… I’m just eating a little bit less at every meal.”

No special diet.
No detox.
No supplements.
No complicated system.

Just slightly smaller portions.

I know that’s not what people want to hear… but it’s still the truth.

In this short talk I break down why creating a calorie deficit is still the number one rule of fat loss, along with 5 places people commonly underestimate calories that can stall progress.

If you feel like you're doing everything right but the scale isn't moving, this might help.

Give it a watch.

And I’m curious:

Where do you think calories sneak into your diet the most?

Cooking oils?
Sauces?
Portion sizes?
Snacking?

Almost done with January… and if you’re being honest, maybe things didn’t go exactly how you planned.

Missed workouts. Nutrition slipped. Motivation dipped.

Good. Welcome to real life.

Here’s the part most people mess up, they think falling off track means they failed. It doesn’t. It just means it’s time to make a decision.

You don’t need a restart.
You don’t need a detox.
You don’t need to “wait until February.”

You need to get back to work.

Today you can choose one simple action.
Eat a solid next meal.
Get your workout in.
Drink your water.
Go to bed a little earlier.

Little hinges swing big doors.

January isn’t over yet, and neither is your goal. Lock in. Let’s finish the month strong. 💪

We’re in the high-protein everything era.

Bars. Chips. Cookies. Cereal.
And while protein matters, relying on “high-protein” snacks all day usually creates more problems than it solves.

I’m not anti protein bars or powders.
I just want at least 80% of your protein coming from whole food sources.

Chicken. Eggs. Greek yogurt. Fish. Beef.

Real meals that actually keep you full and consistent.

I break down:
• Why whole food protein matters
• Where convenience protein actually fits
• How to bulk prep without overthinking it

Protein bars aren’t the problem. Relying on them is. Learn why 80% of your protein should come from whole foods and how to make it simple.

Everyone’s losing their mind, or throwing a massive party over the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
..I actually read the document.

No politics. No fear-mongering. Just what the guidelines actually say, and how they apply in real life.

I even ran the suggested servings through my own macros, and the results were SHOCKING (see the breakdown in the post).

Read the full breakdown on the blog if you want context instead of headlines.

Most people don’t struggle because they lack discipline.
They struggle because they’re trying to do everything alone.

Sadie had been doing what so many people do.
Tracking macros.
Trying different lifting apps.
Even working with another online coach who just did not engage with her much at all.

After having two kids, she wanted to feel strong again.
She wanted to stay motivated.
She wanted to actually enjoy working out.
And she wanted to stop overthinking food and feel confident about how to fuel her body.

Here’s what she shared with me:

“Mike, working with you has been fantastic, and I recommend you to everyone I know. I wish I lived in Verona to be a regular member of the gym, not just virtual.

I wanted to continue to feel strong, motivated, and enjoy working out, and also figure out how to fuel my body.

I have struggled with overthinking eating, and you have given me the tools to be successful.”

This is what coaching should feel like.

Not pressure.

Not confusion.

Not burnout.

Just support, structure, and a plan that fits your real life.

If you’ve been trying to do this on your own and feeling stuck, you’re not broken. You just need the right support.

Read this before you start chasing the “perfect” New Year plan.

Because here’s the truth that most resolutions forget:
The perfect workout is the one you can actually stick to.
And the best diet? It’s not the trendiest one on Instagram.
It’s the one you can live with today, next week, and 6 months from now.

As we head into January, it’s easy to get sucked into all the noise.
The new “super supplements.”
The 47-step morning routines.
The intermittent keto carnivore collagen detox protocol.
Spoiler alert: None of that matters if your habits are still a mess.

If your sleep sucks, you skip meals all day then binge at night, drink 12 Diet Cokes, and move less than 3K steps a day... It doesn’t matter what pill you take or what $97 meal plan you downloaded.

The basics will always win.
Daily movement. Structured, satisfying meals. Protein. Water. Sleep.
And being honest with yourself, not perfect.

This year, aim to be consistent, not flawless.
Progress, not perfection.
Sustainability, not extremes.

Start by asking:
👉 What can I actually do this week?
👉 What’s one habit I know I can build, even on my busiest days?
👉 What’s worked for me before—and what absolutely hasn’t?

Then go do that.
Not what your friend’s doing. Not what TikTok says.
Your plan. Your pace. Your win.

Little hinges swing big doors...this year is yours.

Let’s go.
