👀 The browband matters more than you might think!

These two photos show the same headpiece, but with different browbands.

📸 Photo 1: A correctly fitting browband allows the headpiece to sit in its intended position, clear of the base of the ears and without creating unnecessary pressure around the TMJ.

📸 Photo 2: The browband is too short. Notice how the angles of the headpiece have changed. The short browband has pulled the headpiece forward onto the base of the ears and caused it to sit over the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). It is also sitting on the temporal muscles on the horses forehead.

This is why assessing bridle fit is about much more than simply checking whether a browband "looks" the right size.

Research has highlighted the importance of minimising pressure around the ears and poll, with increasing awareness of the potential impact of bridle pressure on sensitive structures around the ear and the TMJ. The goal should always be to allow the horse as much comfort and freedom of movement as possible, rather than creating pressure through poorly fitting components.

Comfort, simplicity and welfare don’t have to cost the earth — but fit is everything. What suits one horse may not suit another, and the right bridle is always the one that fits and feels comfortable for that individual horse.

I’ve recently added a couple of more affordable options for clients to consider:

🐴 BR Bits Eggbutt Lozenge — £41
🐴 Bridle + bit — £106

Nothing fancy, no unnecessary extras — just a simple, well-fitting option that can provide comfort without costing the moon.

I ma an independent fitter so I carry a range of bridles in my kit. The bridle I recommend for your horse will always be the one that fits and suits the individual horse comfortably. Price, brand or fashion come second to fit, comfort and welfare.

Simple can be good. Affordable can be good. But it has to be right for the horse. 🐴✨

A well fitting bridle ensures comfort by removing pressure.

This bridle was fitted by me to the clients previous horse and needed a few adjustments to fit her new horse. Thats the beauty of companies like horsemanship saddlery, the parts come individually so I can fit whatever size parts the horse needs.

I have previously fitted an xfull headpiece, pony cheekpieces, cob noseband, throatlash and browband on one horse. This company also has 9 different headpiece shapes to suit individual head anatomy.

The ability to fit individual parts to get a precision fit is the reason why I only work with a selected few bridle companies. Welfare and comfort always comes first.

I received the loveliest review from a client this week and honestly, it meant the world to me. ❤️

Hearing that he is so much happier, more comfortable, and has made such astounding progress since changing to a new bit and bridle means more to me than I can put into words. To know that something as simple as finding the right equipment has made such a positive difference to how he feels in his body, how he moves, and how much he enjoys his work is exactly why I do what I do.

I think it's easy to underestimate just how much impact the correct bit and bridle can have on a horse's comfort, biomechanics, confidence, and overall wellbeing. When a horse is truly comfortable, they can use their body more effectively, communicate more clearly, and often become so much happier in their work. Some changes are subtle, while others are absolutely phenomenal, and stories like this remind me just how powerful those changes can be.
