Billingham RUFC has four senior teams: the 1st XV currently playing in National 3 North, four leagues from the Premiership; the 2nd XV (Lions) currently playing in The "Candy League" Division 1; the 3rd XV currently playing in The "Candy League"; the Colts playing a competitive Saturday Colts League. The club has a promising junior section ranging from u7 minis to u16's with teams winning Durham c

ounty cups and leagues. Players who have come through the junior section have gone on to higher levels. Christopher Hyndman, playing for England under-21s and Northampton with Craig Willis currently attached to Newcastle Falcons Academy although he is currently on loan to Blaydon. A bit of history.....
Billingham Rugby Club was formed in 1924 as the Rugby Section of the Synthonia Sports Club at Synthetic Ammonia and Nitrates Company, which later became I.C.I. Once established, the club became a force in Durham County Rugby Union, especially after the Second World War and the first team was very strong during the 1950s and early 1960s. The early 1970s saw a downturn in the chemical industry and with the decline of I.C.I., the rugby club suffered. In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s the club became somewhat nomadic in its socialising, although still playing on Central Avenue.

1989 was an important year in the life of the club. The Youth section was founded and boys and girls from the age of eight upwards starting playing mini-rugby. Since then, this section of the club has gone from strength to strength and has provided several current members of the first XV squad. The 1990s saw an upturn in the club's fortunes and three teams were regularly playing each week with socialising based at the Synthonia Cricket Club. The club moved to play on Greenwood Road in 1996 although until late 2000 there were no facilities whatsoever, just three pitches. For these years we had a three-site existence, changing, playing and socialising in different locations. However, December 2000 and a £750,000 lottery grant brought the opening of the new clubhouse giving the club a solid base and identity.

📢 FIXTURES ARE OUT! 📢

A landmark moment for Billingham Rugby Club.

For the first time, our 2nd XV and 3rd XV will both be competing in a full league structure — and, in our view, it’s something that has been a long time coming.

This is a massive step forward for the club. A full league programme brings consistency, stability, and a clear goal to work towards throughout the season. More fixtures. More opportunities. More rugby.

It’s an exciting development for both squads, creating a competitive environment every week and giving players across the club the chance to test themselves, develop, and represent Billingham with pride.

The fixtures are now locked in. The hard work starts here.

The countdown is on.

Our National 2 North journey begins on 5 September with a home clash against Fylde, giving the Billingham faithful the first chance to get behind the lads at Greenwood Road this season.

September is a huge opening month. Alongside welcoming Wharfedale to Billingham, we’ll be making the trips to Harrogate and Chester, with both clubs set to provide stern early-season tests. Chester’s return to the league adds another exciting dimension to what is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive campaign.

One fixture already catching the eye is Saturday 10 October, when we welcome Sedgley Park. A historic club with a proud rugby tradition, it’s one of many standout occasions supporters won’t want to miss.

With familiar rivals, returning clubs and some of the biggest names in National 2 North heading our way, there’s plenty to look forward to over the months ahead.

Get the fixtures in your diary, rally your mates and get behind the Lions. The build-up is underway, the excitement is growing, and we’re ready to enjoy the ride together.

A Father’s Day Tribute to Our Rugby Dads

To the dads of Billingham RFC

For every early Sunday morning,
Every muddy boot and forgotten sock,
For every lift to training,
And every wait by the touchline clock.

For the hands that lace the boots up tight,
For the words that calm the nerves,
For the cheers that echo from the sidelines,
And the belief that every child deserves.

For the coaches who give their evenings,
Teaching lessons far beyond the game,
Showing respect, resilience and teamwork,
Helping young players grow in name.

For the mentors who lead by example,
Who pick us up when confidence falls,
Who celebrate every tackle and try,
And remind us to enjoy it all.

For the friendships built around rugby,
From minis right through to the vets,
The laughs shared on away-day journeys,
And memories we’ll never forget.

For the sneaky pint after training,
Or a chat in the clubhouse bar,
Where stories grow a little bigger,
And lifelong friendships aren’t far.

For the dads who played before us,
And the dads still pulling on the shirt,
For the sacrifices made in silence,
Through every triumph, bruise and hurt.

Most of all, for the time you’ve given,
Because time is the greatest gift of all,
Creating memories with your children,
Both on and off the rugby field.

So today, we say thank you,
To every father, coach and friend,
