This year, Lacombe was lucky enough to receive two truck loads of retired broodstock Brown Trout from the Allison Creek Brood Trout Station. These fish are 4 years old and are around 8lbs! Approximately 50 fish went into Len Thompson Pond, and 25 into the Powell Pond (North East Trout Pond) which is located behind the Lacombe Police Station.
We get asked a lot of questions about the Len Thompson Pond. Here are a few quick FAQs.
1. Is the pond open to the public?
YES! The pond is City of Lacombe property, managed by the Lacombe Fish and Game association. The pond is named after Len Thompson, and we are volunteers and supporters of the LFGA, but this is not a private pond.
2. Is it catch and release?
Catch and release is strongly encouraged. We believe that community spaces like this are designed to create accessible fishing opportunities. Nothing makes LFGA volunteers happier than seeing a kid reel in their first fish.
3. Do you need a license?
All persons sportfishing in Alberta are required to hold an Alberta Sportfishing Licence, except: Youths under 16 years of age, Alberta residents aged 65 and older, First Nations’ Persons (defined as an Indian under the federal Indian Act). Alberta resident Canadian Armed Forces Veterans are also eligible for a free sportfishing licence.
