THANK YOU to everyone who joined us at the 2026 Kids Can Catch event at the Len Thompson Pond this past Saturday. After the weather forecast called for rain all week, it turned out to be a perfect day.

THANK YOU to our sponsors. Families got to release ~1000 rainbow trout supplied by Smoky Trout Farm. Face painters were on site courtesy of Dow Chemicals Prentiss. AHEIA (Alberta Hunter Education Instructors' Association) was busy educating future archers. Hot dogs and hamburgers were served courtesy of Heidelberg Materials. A special thanks also to Servus Credit Union, MEG Global and Len Thompson Lures.

The Lacombe Fishing and Game Association is excited to welcome families back for our annual Kids Can Catch event on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at the beautiful Len Thompson Fishing Pond in Lacombe!
🕙 Time: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
📍 Location: Len Thompson Fishing Pond, Lacombe
This free family event is a great opportunity to introduce kids to fishing, conservation, and the outdoors in a fun and welcoming environment.

🐟 Kids helping release rainbow trout into the pond
🎯 Fun activities and games
🌭 Complimentary BBQ, snacks, and refreshments
🎁 Giveaways and prizes
🎓 Fishing mentors on-site to help new anglers

Bring your own fishing rod if you have one — a limited number of rods will also be available to borrow.

The 2026 Awards Night was a great success once again. A little late getting photos posted as I had issues with the phone, but pictures got recovered and are finally here.

Have your say on proposed changes to Alberta’s migratory bird seasons. Feedback closes Feb 15.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is consulting on proposals that could affect future hunting opportunities, including:
• Expanding Sandhill Crane seasons into 14 additional PWMUs
• Adding PWMU 247 to Zone 1
• Exploring a future Mourning Dove season (not before Fall 2028)
• Considering a limited Tundra Swan draw in a later round

These are proposals only — no changes are final yet.

If you care about hunting opportunities, wildlife, or how seasons are managed in Alberta, this is your opportunity to be part of the process rather than just watching it unfold.

Every February deer drop their antlers — and dogs are magnetically drawn to them. They smell like bone, they taste like marrow, and to a dog they’re the greatest chew toy ever discovered.

For about 30 seconds.

Then comes the quiet part owners always describe the same way:

“He just crunched it once… and stopped chewing.”

Antlers are not like bones.
They are denser than teeth.

Dogs don’t chip them gradually — they shatter a tooth instantly. Most dogs don’t cry. They just walk away, swallow funny for a day, and by the time you notice something is wrong, the nerve is already exposed.

The emergency vet sees it every late winter.
Not because dogs are reckless — because owners thought it was just a stick.

This is the only time of year it really happens. Shed season.

So on walks for the next few weeks:
watch where your dog’s nose goes, not where your feet go.

If they grab one, don’t chase and don’t pull — trade for a treat and move on. To them it’s treasure. To you it’s a dental bill.

And if you see one before your dog does, leave it off the trail.

You’re not just preventing a vet visit — you’re leaving winter calcium for the animals that actually depend on it.
