Andrea Davis is the founder of One Smart Cookie K9 Services Inc. and one of Canada's FIRST K9 FIT CLUB Licensees. Training services are offered in-home, virtually and small group class formats. Her goal is to help dogs stay in their families by providing quality, humane, science-based tools and training to clients. The #1 reason dogs are surrendered to a shelter is due to behavior and the lack of skills and understanding from the pet guardians. Andrea has invested much time and effort with a variety of animal rescues and shelters and has worked professionally with animals for many years. Andrea is continuously looking for new ways to accommodate more canines and their human companions, while continuing to provide quality service and helping to meet the needs of individual clients. One Smart Cookie K9 Services' name was inspired by one of her dogs, COOKIE, who was an 8 year old blue heeler/whippet mix. It is also a play on words, being that we can use a 'cookie' in a smart way; to positively reinforce behaviors we want to encourage in our dogs. +R training is motivating to the dog, it builds trust, confidence and a strong bond between the dog and their human companion; it is not dominance based and therefore training is not stressful, but actually fun! Hence 'One Smart Cookie'.

Miss KIZZY at her Canine Life and Social Skills puppy class 🐾💕

Her mom has done a wonderful job teaching her so much already.

KIZZY came in with some beautiful heeling skills and what I like to call “fancy feet” because this girl has some lovely hind end awareness. 💫

A small group class environment gives puppies the chance to work around safe distractions, practice positive socialization, and build important life skills.

And socialization does not always mean interacting with other dogs.

For KIZZY, we are working on calm, polite greetings and honing her disengagement skills, which will be especially helpful for her prospective sport of agility.

Smart girl. Fancy feet. Big future. 🐾💕

DIESEL accommodating a quick photo op after his FIT-Foundations™ Level 1 class 🖤🐾📸

Fun fact about Black Russian Terriers:
They are large, powerful working dogs originally developed for guarding, strength, confidence, and versatility. They can have a serious, impressive presence, but DIESEL is also a very affectionate love bug who happily would have let me take 100 photos 🥰

🧠🐾 Behavior Has a Backstory 🐾🧠

When we talk about behavior, we often talk about genetics, socialization, training, enrichment, and environment.

All of these things matter.

But something I’ve been learning about recently is how many factors can influence future behavior before a puppy is even born.

Most of this research has been conducted in other mammals rather than dogs specifically, so we do need to be careful about making direct assumptions.

But the science is fascinating.

🐾 Stress during pregnancy can influence how sensitive an offspring’s stress response system becomes later in life.

🌱 The placenta is not simply delivering nutrients. It is a complex organ that also acts as a filter and can help regulate what reaches developing offspring.

🤒 Maternal health matters too. Infection and inflammation during pregnancy can influence development and future behavior.

🧬 Epigenetics does not change DNA itself. It changes how strongly certain genes are expressed.

Think of it as having the same recipe book, but adjusting how often certain recipes are used.

🐶 Fathers may matter too. Some studies found that stress experienced by fathers before conception can influence offspring through epigenetic mechanisms.

🦠 The gut microbiome is another area researchers are watching closely, with connections between maternal influences, birth experiences, gut health, and behavior.

All this to say…

Behavior does not begin at eight weeks.

It does not begin when a dog enters training.

It does not begin when a behavior challenge appears.

The story may have started much earlier.

In many ways, this is not so different from what we understand about human development.

Genetics, prenatal influences, childhood experiences, relationships, health, environment, and learning all contribute to who we become.

But they do not determine the entire future.

Brains can change.
Learning continues.
New experiences matter.
Skills can be developed.
Confidence can grow.
Resilience can be built.

The same is true for our dogs.

These early influences can help explain where an individual started, but they do not decide where that individual is capable of going.

Every dog has a story.

We may not know where the first chapter began, but we can still influence the chapters that come next 🐾💙

How many seconds do you think a thought lasts? 🤔

The answer may surprise you.

Most thoughts actually last only a few seconds before the brain naturally shifts to something else.

Yet many of us can stay upset, worried, frustrated, or stuck for hours.

Why?

Because we’re often not experiencing one long thought.

We’re experiencing a series of related thoughts.

A trigger happens, a thought appears, and an emotion follows.

AND THEN we think about it again…

We replay what happened.

We predict what might happen next.

We gather more information.

We tell ourselves a story.

Each thought keeps the cycle going.

Each thought tells the brain:

“This is important.”

🐕 The same thing happens for our dogs.

A dog notices another dog.

The dog keeps looking.

Keeps gathering information.

Keeps assigning value to it.

Keeps telling the brain:

“This is important.”

Attention stays on the trigger, and the emotional response can continue to build.

This is why disengagement is such an important life skill.

Disengagement isn’t about pretending something doesn’t exist.

It’s about learning that we can notice something and then choose where our attention goes next.

For dogs, that might look like looking away from another dog, sniffing the ground, checking in with their person, or moving on to another activity.

For people, it might look like going for a walk, praying, practicing gratitude, talking with a friend, or focusing on something productive and meaningful.

The trigger may have lit the match.

But attention often keeps the fire burning.

Attention is fuel.

What are you feeding with yours today?

And what is your dog feeding with theirs?
