University Of Alberta Powerlifting Association Creating strong students, alumni, and community members Last year, Powersurge was the largest powerlifting meet in Alberta, featuring over 60 athletes.

The University of Alberta Powerlifting Association (UAPA) has been a sports club through Recreation Services on the University of Alberta campus. Established in 2005, the club encourages students in the pursuit of strength, safety, and technique in powerlifting, olympic lifting, and strongman. Our club supports amateur athletes in training and competition and has produced athletes who have compete

d at the provincial, national, and world levels. Each winter, the University of Alberta Powerlifting Association hosts a local powerlifting meet at the Universiade Pavilion called “Powersurge”. Through funding from the University Campus Recreation Enhancement Fund, the UAPA has put together one of the best weightlifting gyms in the country. The UAPA has a huge collection of top of the line olympic and powerlifting bars, bumper plates, and calibrated metal plates. The club also has six competition-level powerlifting racks, two squat cages, four Olympic platforms, sleds, and kettlebells. Members have exclusive access to this incredible equipment during club training times. The UAPA supports the Canadian Center for Ethics in Sport and the World Anti Doping Agency. Our lifters compete in drug-tested meets and promote natural athletic performance.

TIME: Tentatively scheduled to take place in the afternoon after the PL novice meet.
This meet is only open to UAPA members who have paid both fees (activity reg and club fee). Since this is a mock meet, judging will not be up to competition standard, and the meet is NOT official.

LIFTER CAP: 14 lifters
REGISTRATION FEE: $20
Registration link will be live in our bio and sent out to our mailing list once it opens!
* To register, you must be a member of the UAPA and have paid your campus recreation fees ($10 to CCR, link in bio!) for the Winter term. If you’re a new member this semester, be sure to also pay your club fee along with the CCR fee.
* Those who have never competed will get priority entry.

This meet will not be sanctioned and is for athletes trying to gain exposure to what stepping on the platform is like!

IMMEDIATE FILMING BAN. Effective Immediately (All Hours) ⚠️

‼️Effective immediately, all filming in the powerlifting area is suspended at all times, including during club hours.

This decision follows situations where recording is continued after being asked by staff to stop. This has raised privacy (FOIP) concerns in a shared facility. Even unintentional capture of people in the background is considered a violation. 

We understand that filming is important for training, feedback and safety. We are actively working with facility staff to explore long-term solutions that protect privacy while supporting athlete needs, but for now, this pause is mandatory.
