Just Keep Movin’: Movement Snacks
- According to the Stanford Center on Longevity, “exercise snacks offer numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, muscular strength, and cognitive enhancement.”

- When at home or at the office, consider keeping resistance bands, a yoga mat, or a few dumbbells near your desk or couch.
Set alarms on your phone with reminders to incorporate “movement snacks” for a few minutes several times per day.
Consider pairing your movement snacks after each meal/snack - this will help you build consistency around the habit, and it will also help you control your blood-glucose levels.

- More about the second-funnest form of snacking here: https://lifestylemedicine.stanford.edu/what-are-exercise-snacks-and-why-are-they-important/

How much time do we spend being sedentary?

- Some simple strategies you can implement to encourage more movement into your day are: pacing while on the phone, standing on one leg while brushing your teeth to practice your balance, stretching or doing mobility drills while watching t.v, or going for a walk during your child’s extracurricular activities.

- These small but beneficial opportunities can add up fast—according to a 2020 Australian study: “accumulating activity may be a choice strategy for improving glycemic control in those with and at risk of diabetes.” Remember that small amounts performed on a consistent basis can add up to big changes over time.

Even when it’s difficult (even maybe more so, when it’s difficult), it is always important to include some movement into your day. For humans, and all other animals, physical activity improves physical performance and staves off muscle loss (preventing muscle loss is one of the main ways to stay healthy and maintain independence as you age). Breathe Fitness specializes in building exercise routines across multiple spectrums (age, fitness level, exercise experience, physical literacy), and over the next few weeks, we want to talk more about, how and why, to keep your body in motion!

100 Days of Summer: Get your Vitamin D dose while it lasts!

You can get vitamin D from sun exposure (as well as certain foods like fish and fortified milk and dietary supplements). Vitamin D is an essential fat-soluble nutrient and hormone that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which are crucial for building strong bones (prevent osteoporosis). It also supports muscle and nerve function and plays a role in immune health, cell growth, and reducing inflammation.

In cooler climates, the sun is too weak to produce enough vitamin D during the late autumn and winter months (October to March). Also, you need a UV Index of at least 3 for your skin to produce vitamin D from sun exposure. The UV Index is highest around midday when the sun is at its peak, meaning you need less time in the sun to produce vitamin D.

Get outside each day to take advantage of what time remains to get your Vitamin D from the sun (instead of your diet or supplements)!
