This is unreal…

Getting a full page feature in the local Central Coast Community News about my story to UTMB HOKA UTMBĀ® Mont-Blanc is insane.

I hope this inspires someone to give it a crack - or even just take the next step on your journey. Whatever that looks like for you.

Thank you so much for all your support. šŸ™

I’ll pop the link to the article on my story for anyone who’s interested to read it.

Tight calves = stretch them.

Makes sense, right?

They feel tight, so you try to loosen them up.

And if stretching feels good, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that.

But that feeling of tightness doesn’t automatically mean your calves simply need more flexibility.

Think about what you’re actually asking them to do when you run.

Step after step, they’re absorbing force, producing force and helping propel you forward.

So I don’t just want a runner’s calves to feel loose for the sake of it.

I want them to be capable.

That’s why I like building:

Heavy straight-knee calf strength.

Heavy bent-knee soleus strength.

Then faster, springier work like pogos.

I ruptured my achilles about four years ago, so this kind of work is a staple in my own training too.

I want strong calves. A strong soleus. And an achilles that’s prepared for the demands I’m going to put through it.

Mobility can absolutely have its place.

But if your calves repeatedly feel tight and your only response is to stretch them again...

You might be missing a pretty important part of the puzzle.

Don’t chase flexibility.

Build capacity. šŸ‘Š

Some of the most valuable preparation I did for UTMB didn’t make me any fitter.

I practised eating when I wasn’t hungry.

Using my poles until it became automatic.

Running at night.

Changing layers.

Managing gloves.

Knowing exactly where everything lived in my vest.

Working out what food I could still stomach after hours on my feet.

My long runs weren’t just about accumulating kilometres.

They became rehearsals.

Because 30 hours into an ultra, exhausted, cold and not thinking particularly clearly, you don’t want to be figuring this s**t out for the first time.

And despite all that preparation, plenty still went wrong at UTMB šŸ˜‚

My stomach turned.

My knee blew up.

The weather changed.

Plans went out the window.

But that’s kind of the point.

The purpose of preparation isn’t to guarantee everything goes to plan.

It’s to make you better equipped when it doesn’t.

Fitness matters enormously.

But there’s a hell of a lot more to preparing for an ultramarathon than simply getting fitter.

This is why I love strength training for runners.

Not because I care how much weight someone can lift in the gym.

But because of what that strength allows them to do when they run.

When he first started training with me, he’d often start races well before fading towards the end.

Now he’s winning them.

Of course, strength training isn’t the only reason for that.

He’s trained hard, he’s developed as a runner and he’s put in the work.

But getting stronger and more powerful has been an important part of that process.

And getting a message from his mum saying ā€œBig differenceā€ absolutely made my day.

That’s the goal.

Stronger. More powerful. Faster when it matters most. šŸ‘Š

For 9 months, every spare hour was spent prepping for UTMB.

Run. Strength train. Climb. Hike. Spreadsheets. Planning. Recover. Repeat.

Now I’m just wandering around the house eating pretzels and left over waffles šŸ˜‚

Might take me a while to adjust to this normal-person lifestyle 🫠

120km into UTMB, I let go of the goal I’d spent months chasing.

Sub-40 hours was in the bin.

No chance.

My knee was pi**ed off. I was exhausted. And I still had three major climbs and a long night between me and Chamonix.

So I stopped caring about the clock.

The only thing that mattered was getting to the finish.

Next checkpoint.

Next climb.

Next step.

Just keep moving.

About 13 hours later, I was finally descending towards Chamonix when I looked at my watch.

Somehow, after an entire night of not thinking about my finish time, sub-40 hours was still possible.

F**k it.

I broke into the best hobble I could muster. šŸ˜‚

38 hours and 53 minutes.

I’ve thought about that a lot since.

For months, I’d obsessed over the outcome.

Then, when things got really hard, I had to let it go and focus entirely on what I could actually control.

The next step.

Sometimes letting go of the outcome is exactly what allows you to keep doing what’s required.

One step at a time.

Really interesting morning at Pace Athletic today for the launch of the new Garmin Australia & New Zealand fēnix 9.

Got to hear from Olympians Peter Bol and Eloise Wellings , alongside performance coach Andrew May - Performance Intelligence , talking all things endurance performance, recovery and data.

Pretty bloody cool opportunity to sit in a room and learn from people at that level.

And weirdly, one of my biggest takeaways had very little to do with the watch itself.

We have access to an unbelievable amount of information now.

HRV. Sleep. Stress. Training load. Recovery. Readiness.

Even jet lag advising.

But more data isn’t automatically better.

It only becomes useful if we actually know what to do with it.

When to push.

When to back off.

And sometimes, when to ignore the bloody watch šŸ˜‚

Some really good reminders for me as both a coach and runner.

Thanks to Pace Athletic and Garmin Australia & New Zealand for having me along. šŸ‘Š

Plenty to think about.
