Two of our women's health physios are speaking next week, both alongside the YMCA.

Wednesday 9 September, 3.30 to 4.30pm, Kensington Community Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

Phoebe Cunningham on returning to exercise after birth. Being cleared at your six week check isn't the same as being ready to run, and Phoebe goes through everything that sits between the two. Gentle core work from around two weeks. Tummy separation, how common it is and what actually helps. How recovery differs after a caesarean. Pelvic floor rehab and the signs you're ready for more. Then a staged way back to walking, and a real checklist for getting back to running.

Thursday 10 September, 6 to 7pm, Carlton Baths.

Debbi Lim on exercise through perimenopause and menopause. What to prioritise for bone density, muscle and energy, why starting earlier makes a difference, and how to keep training with confidence through the transition and well after it.

Both are worth your time if you're in either season, or if you're supporting someone who is.

Can't make it? Book an appointment with them for all the info and a full assessment one on one.

Nobody can see their pelvic floor working. That is the whole problem.

If your squat is wrong, a coach can see it and so can you. If your pelvic floor contraction is wrong, nothing shows. You can be squeezing your glutes, holding your breath, or pushing down instead of lifting, and it feels exactly like doing the exercise. So you keep doing it. For years, sometimes.

"I did them religiously after my first and it made no difference." We hear that a lot. Usually the exercise was fine. The version of it being done was not.

There is another group this catches. Some pelvic floors are too tight, not too weak, and the symptoms overlap: urgency, heaviness, pain with s*x, trouble emptying. For those women, more squeezing is the wrong answer and can make things worse. You cannot tell which type you are from the inside. That is what the assessment is for.

It starts as a conversation, then a check of what your muscles actually do when you ask them to work. There is more than one way to assess, and you choose the one you are comfortable with. From there your program is built on what your body is actually doing, not on a diagram.

If you had a baby six months ago or sixteen years ago. If you leak when you run and never have. If things feel heavy, or you are noticing changes through perimenopause. Or if kegels seem to make things worse rather than better. This is worth one appointment.

Welcome to the team, Emily.

Emily spent years as an elite gymnast, which means she was coached hard, learned to read her own body closely, and came out of it knowing exactly how technique gets built. She teaches Pilates, spin and strength at Hampton East now, and that background is all over her classes.

She's specific with her cues. She notices the shoulder you're protecting before you mention it, and if you need a different option, you'll get one straight away. Eight years of coaching since gymnastics means she's seen a lot of bodies at a lot of stages and knows what to do with yours.

What she cares most about is that getting stronger feels good rather than something you endure.

Emily's classes are on the Hampton East timetable now.

Say hello to Riley, one of the physios in our Kensington team.

Riley completed his Doctor of Physiotherapy at the University of Melbourne and has five years of experience treating the full range of musculoskeletal conditions, from the low back that flares up when you sit too long to the knee, hip, or ankle that's making training and sleeping harder than it needs to be. His approach is to work out what's actually driving the pain, not just where it shows up, then explain what he finds in plain language and give you a plan you can genuinely work with.

Riley's also a serious athlete himself, a marathon and ultra runner and Ironman finisher, so he understands the difference between a niggle to train through and a signal to back off. He won't tell you to just stop moving if you've got a life you'd like to keep living.

Riley is at Kensington Monday to Thurs and Saturday morning.
