A label can describe part of your story without defining all of who you are.

Leader. Parent. Founder. Carer. High performer. The difficult one. The strong one who always has it together.

Some labels are given to us. Others come from experiences, expectations or roles we may have outgrown. The problem begins when a label stops being a description and starts becoming an instruction.

We do this in the workplace too. We label someone a “high performer,” then keep giving them more until they burn out. We decide someone is “difficult,” then stop being curious about what might be driving their behaviour.

We conclude someone is “not leadership material,” then stop giving them opportunities to grow.

People are far too complex to be understood through one word, one behaviour or one moment.

In my latest newsletter, I explore how labels limit people, potential and performance and how curiosity, agency and a little more 'AND' thinking can help us see better possibilities.

And yes, there’s cake involved. 🎂

I've been thinking a lot about avoidance lately. Not because we don't know what needs our attention. More often, I think we do.

We know which conversation we've been putting off. We know where something isn't working anymore. We know when we're hoping a problem will quietly resolve itself.

The difficult part isn't recognising it. It's deciding we're ready to face it.

I've found that some of the biggest shifts in leadership don't begin with a new strategy or framework. They begin with a moment of honesty.

✨ What's something you've been avoiding that might deserve your attention?

Take a moment to think about the people around you.

Who challenges your ideas, offers a different perspective, or encourages you to think bigger?

As leaders, it is easy to build relationships around what needs to get done. But when every conversation becomes transactional, we can miss the deeper value of genuine connection. The right people do more than agree with us. They stretch us, support our growth, and help us become the leaders we need to be for the future we are creating.

Strong networks do not happen by accident. They are built through curiosity, trust, and intentional effort.

Who in your ecosystem could you reconnect with or invest in this week?

I once worked with a leader who thought their role was just to “manage tasks.”

They didn’t realise that every sigh, every smile, every quick word, was shaping the way their team showed up.

A year after they left, the team still repeated their catchphrases… and their habits.

The ripple you create today will outlast your presence.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸?

This is the heart of Legacy part of the Transformation pillar in INFINITE Leadership. The way you show up today becomes the culture tomorrow.

What’s one positive ripple you can create this week?

Have you ever felt like your team knows exactly where it needs to go… but somehow, nothing is moving?

The vision is clear. The conversations have happened. The effort is there. And yet, it still feels like pushing a roller-coaster over its tipping point.

Sometimes, the answer isn’t another reminder or another internal meeting. Sometimes, people need to hear the message differently- a well-timed interruption that helps them pause, reconnect and see what’s possible.

I call this 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁.

The spark alone won’t create lasting change. But it can generate the momentum leaders and teams need to begin moving forward again.

I explore this idea in my latest newsletter and share why meaningful change should never feel cookie-cutter.

One thing I've been reminded of lately is how easy it is to admire the outcome and forget everything that came before it. We celebrate the promotion, the confident leader, the successful team, or the breakthrough moment.

What we don't always see are the difficult conversations, the setbacks, the self-doubt, or the countless small decisions that made those moments possible. I've come to believe that leadership isn't just about recognising where people are today. It's about appreciating the journey that got them there.

The same is true for ourselves. Sometimes we move on to the next goal so quickly that we forget to acknowledge how far we've already come.

✨ What part of your journey deserves a little more recognition today?

Transformation begins when leaders recognise that what got them here may not get them where they need to go next.

As environments change, leadership must evolve too.

Adaptive leaders are willing to challenge old assumptions, embrace new perspectives, and grow beyond familiar ways of thinking.

Progress is not always measured by financial results alone.

Often, the most meaningful growth is seen in people, culture, and capability.

What discomfort in your leadership might actually be a sign that transformation is underway?

Do you ever feel like you’re doing everything, but there’s little time left for you?

You’re not alone.

I’m looking forward to an honest conversation at the Kenrose Collective Founding Event about balancing careers, family, relationships and personal goals without losing ourselves along the way.

We’ll talk about what real self-care looks like, why balance isn’t about perfection and how we can build success without sacrificing our wellbeing.

Join us for coffee, cake and connection on Tuesday, 28 July at Kenrose Bakery, Carina.
