Our goal is to teach resilience, courage, self-respect, discipline and compassion through karate. We believe in fostering the best in our students’ spirits while improving their physical strength. Goju Ryu Karate Centre is owned by Ché Jagger, who has his 5th dan in Goju Ryu and has studied karate since 1980. He has worked as a teacher in both schools and the dojo for over twenty years. He has rep

resented South Africa for karate, and has also served as a coach for the national team for many years. Zoë Hinis is the dojo administrator, handling all accounts, communications and event management. She is also an assistant instructor, and has been training in Goju Ryu since 2006, and currently holds a shodan ranking. Both instructors have first aid training. We have direct lineage to our home dojo in Okinawa, Japan, giving our karate authenticity and substance.

Two ADHD instructors sit down to chat about practical, Okinawan karate, and all its benefits: better police work, bullyproofing, and helping ADHD kids (and adults!) find somewhere to belong. Also, we shamelessly namedrop some friends in the Tri-Nations Mutual Appreciation Society 🤣

I absolutely love this amazing picture book written by Hanshi Akihito Yagi of Meibukan (and Kuro Obi!) fame. I hope little (and maybe big?) karate kids will enjoy this read-along, with my usual notes along the way.

A great picture flat book written for karate children around the world, by one of the best teachers and practitioners of the art, Sensei Akihito Yagi of Meib...

How to figure out the best length for your karate belt (and why matte belts are my favourite).

26/12/2025

Ever wondered how to properly place those hard-earned stripes on a martial arts belt? Here's a quick guide to getting it right, from spacing to stitching. No more crooked stripes!

24/12/2025

In karate, you can't change belts every few months like grades in school. The stripe system creates steps and slows down young students aiming for black belts (which aren't given before 15). Stripes help them feel progress, like class tests before a big exam.

A karate belt shows your dedication. We teach kids to tie their own belts when they're old enough. Neatness and appearance are part of the discipline and confidence karate instills. It's about how you carry yourself.

19/12/2025

Making your child responsible for their karate belt teaches them more than just a skill. It builds confidence, ownership, and important life skills like remembering and packing. Forgetting it isn't the end of the world, but it's a low-stakes way to learn!
