Today I had the honor of promoting my good friend and 2nd in command Gian📸 to black belt. I started the program at Fight House close to 7 years ago with myself being the sole instructor. Gian joined us about 4 years ago after having been a training partner of mine at VBJJ for several years before that. It’s hard to run a program by yourself and Gian has been an immense help teaching classes, spending time with students to help them gain understanding of certain concepts, and coaching at tournaments. He’s always been supportive of my program and the gym and has been someone that our students look up to. This promotion has been a long time in coming. Congrats Gian!

Running random Kumites is probably my favorite thing to do as a coach 😅. Beyond my personal entertainment though there are 2 main reasons I do this. 1) Learning to apply technique under duress is essential for self defense. 2) Having students coach each other gives them an insight into the things I look for, and improves their understanding of Jiu Jitsu altogether. Many people are hobbyists and choose not to compete, and that’s ok! But unless you try to apply the techniques you’ve learned against an opponent that is FULLY resisting, I feel that you miss out on what makes Jiu Jitsu truly useful for self defense.
