Katalyst Kombatives

Katalyst Kombatives Katalyst Kombatives is the premier adult only self-defense oriented gym in Virginia Beach. New students start with a $20 Intro Experience.

Katalyst Kombatives is a modern Krav Maga and self-defense gym in Virginia Beach, Virginia, led by owner and head instructor David Bergman. We train adults only, from total beginners to experienced martial artists, in practical civilian self-defense built for real situations rather than sport or competition. Classes cover striking, escapes, weapon defense, and situational awareness. Every technique gets tested against live resistance, so you find out what actually holds up under pressure instead of taking someone's word for it. It's money-back, and it credits toward membership. Serving Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and the surrounding Hampton Roads area.

Sometimes I just like to be contrarian.

Pummeling drills. Swim, switch head position, switch, switch. Everyone puts a lot of reps into it.

After you get the flow and can repeat on demand there is a very limited return.

Is it worth the class time... sometimes I'm not sure. But it opens up drills that I like so for now it stays in class.

Backing up feels safe. It isn't.

If they're driving forward with a stick, you will never backpedal faster than they can walk.
You'll just get hit while you retreat.
Two real options: go into them to regain your posture, or turn and actually run.
And turning your back on someone already swinging means taking shots the whole way out.

Most people try to punch their way out.

Striking can absolutely be part of a bear hug. It just isn't first.

Your ability to strike depends on your ability to stay stable. Not picked up. Not put on your hips.

So striking is a second tier problem. Getting stable is the first one.

Solve them in that order.

Two people versus you? You have to get up. No way around it.

David is a good grappler. Against two people with mediocre experience, he loses 88% of the time.
Grappling one person is fun.
Grappling two people, even in training, feels like assault.
That's why the ground is the last place you want to be in a real situation.

Respecting the art and the lineage. David gives it a 3.

Lineage is fine. Knowing where things came from is fine.
But following people blindly? That's called a cult.
Bowing to a founder's photo and vowing to preserve his lineage forever, when he was just a man with flaws like the rest of us. That can go too far.
Respect your training partners. That part is huge.
But if the lineage doesn't serve your goals, it doesn't serve your goals.

If you struggle with your cardio, watch this.

You're flailing. You're half out of breath. You probably didn't breathe for the last two minutes, and you're spending everything you've got to stop something bad from happening.

That feels like drowning.

Swimming has rhythm. You breathe, you pace, you recover. Drowning has none of that, and you run out of air in seconds.

So when you gas out after two minutes on the mat, more road work usually isn't the fix. It helps a little. It doesn't replace skill.

Send this to whoever keeps telling you they just need more conditioning.

Repetition builds reaction. True or false?

David gives it a six. Here's why the number splits.
Reps in front of a mirror: that's a 1. It doesn't build fight skill.
Reps under pressure against a live opponent who is making decisions: that's a 10.
Same word, repetition. Completely different results.

How well does the head coach do against a stick? 50/50.

Sometimes great. Sometimes not so great.
This is about tactics and decision-making a whole lot more than techniques.
Make the wrong read, pay the penalty.
That's why it's best to not get into fights with people holding sticks or knives. But sometimes it's unavoidable.
And that's why we train like this.

Bumping out of a clinch is the wrong answer.

You break contact and now you are standing in front of free swinging hands. Or a free shooting weapon you never saw.

So we drill the opposite. Asia works to connect her hands. My only job is to stop that from happening without separating.

If she connects, we switch. Now I am the one underneath.

Slow and cooperative first. The speed comes later.

If the choke drill feels easy, it's fake.

A loose grip on the neck isn't a choke. It's a hug, and you can escape it any way you want.
So you end up building escapes that fall apart the second someone means it.
A real one connects high, up under the chin, and lifts.
That's what exposes the throat, and that's the grip you have to train against.
Then you pluck, pull it off, and move around to the side.
