If I could start all over again, knowing what I know now, what would I do differently?

That's a question I've found myself asking quite a bit over the last few years. And honestly, the answers have changed a lot about Nerve.

Long before Nerve existed, I dreamed of owning my own gym. I just didn't know exactly what that gym would look like. Then I discovered CrossFit, and it gave me the playbook to turn that dream into reality.

And man, did I love it!

The workouts, competition, challenge, and community. I loved discovering that something I initially thought was only for elite athletes could actually be for just about anyone.

But as the years went by, I started seeing things differently.

For starters, I realized that while I knew CrossFit could be for almost anyone, a lot of people outside our walls didn't believe that. The name itself was keeping some people from ever giving us a chance.

After conversations with Ben about creating a brand we could fully own, CrossFit Nerve became Nerve Health & Fitness. It was exciting, a little terrifying, and an important step toward becoming who we wanted to be.

But the biggest evolution was still ahead.

For years, my motto was "Have Fun. Get Fit!" And sometimes I think that translated into, "Let's see how badly we can destroy everyone's souls today!"

I loved hard workouts. Still do! But I was beginning to realize that harder didn't always mean better.

Between my own injuries, burnout, and stalled progress, along with seeing similar struggles in longtime members, I started questioning our approach. Did we really need so many complicated movements? Did every workout need to be so intense? Were we building fitness that would last a lifetime?

I kept coming back to that original question. If I were starting over today, what would I do differently?

About a year and a half ago, we made one of the biggest changes in Nerve's history. We moved away from traditional CrossFit programming and began building our approach around Complete Training.

We simplified movements, removed Olympic lifting and high-skill gymnastics, made strength training a consistent priority, and gave each training day a purpose.

We still work hard. Trust me, we haven't forgotten how to do that! But we want people to train with intention, make progress, and build strength they can carry into the rest of their lives.

And man, what a difference it's made.

Coaching has become more enjoyable. Members are getting stronger, building confidence, and training alongside one another regardless of where they're starting. We're seeing more people train with us than ever before.

And that's what matters.

This was never about CrossFit being right or wrong. I'm incredibly thankful for what it gave me and the role it played in Nerve's story. But my responsibility isn't to defend a name or a methodology. It's to make the best decisions I can for the people the Lord has entrusted me to coach and care for.

Ten years ago, I wanted to create a place where people could have fun and get fit.

Today, I still want that. I just have a much clearer understanding of what being fit for life really means.

We've changed our name, our training, and our approach. But the heart behind it hasn't changed.

Have Fun. Get Fit. And build a stronger life along the way.

Nobody tells you all the things that come with owning a business.

When I opened Nerve ten years ago, I knew there would be challenges. But I don’t think I had any idea how many things I’d have to figure out along the way. People hear that you own a business and sometimes imagine it’s this really cool thing where you’re your own boss, make your own schedule and get to do whatever you want.

And sometimes it is pretty cool! But there’s another side of it that isn’t nearly as pretty.

I can honestly say there’s never been a time when I thought Nerve wasn’t going to make it. Maybe that’s my competitive side, maybe I’m just stubborn, or maybe it’s a little of both. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been some really tough seasons.

In 2018, we expanded into our fourth bay. At the time, I thought we were ready. Looking back, I realize we probably weren’t, and that decision put us in a much tighter financial position than I ever expected.

One of the things I’ve learned about owning a small business is that sometimes everyone else gets taken care of before you do. The bills get paid, the coaches get paid, the business gets what it needs, and you figure out what’s left for yourself. There have been plenty of seasons when that’s exactly what I did.

It’s not a side of business ownership I love talking about, but it’s part of the story.

Then came 2020.

I remember watching everything unfold with COVID and trying to make sense of what was happening. I never thought we were going to close Nerve. That honestly felt like the furthest thing from my mind. But as things became more uncertain, I realized I didn’t know enough about what was happening to feel confident that keeping our doors open was the responsible thing to do.

And I loved our people too much to be careless with that decision.

So we closed for six weeks while I figured out how we could safely get back to doing what we loved.

Within days, we had turned Nerve into an online gym. I was coaching Zoom classes from my basement, filming workout briefings, and renting dumbbells out to members so they could keep training at home.

Speaking of those dumbbells, I’m pretty sure a few of you still have some. You know who you are. I don’t…. so if you could return those dumbbells that would be great 😉

It was one of the strangest seasons of my life. Everything felt completely upside down, and I was doing everything I could to make things feel as normal as possible for our members.

And as awful as parts of it were, I also remember being incredibly fired up.

There was no time to sit around wondering what to do. We had people counting on us, and I was determined to find a way to keep coaching them. My competitive side kicked in, and I went after it with everything I had.

Our coaches and team were incredible through that entire season. They adjusted, learned new things, helped solve problems and continued showing up for our people when nobody really knew what the next week would bring.

And behind the scenes, the Lord was taking care of things in ways I couldn’t have planned.

My business partner, Ben, was working with small businesses through his regular job and understood opportunities that I never would have known how to navigate. He helped us with grants and other resources that made a huge difference.

I was also a lululemon ambassador at the time, and they stepped in with a grant that came at just the right moment. I still remember Kirsten telling me about it. I was absolutely floored.

Kirsten, thank you. I’ll never forget that moment. And Ben, looking back on everything you helped us navigate during that season means more to me than you probably know.

Then there were our members.

When we reopened, I was nervous. Not because I thought Nerve wouldn’t survive, but because I had no idea how people would respond after everything we’d been through.

And man, did our people show up.

They supported us, encouraged us and helped us get back to doing what we loved. At a time when businesses all around us were struggling and some were closing their doors, we were still here.

I don’t take that for granted. Not for one second.

Interestingly enough, some of our tougher financial seasons actually came after COVID, when everything started settling down again. That’s another thing I’ve learned. Just because you’ve made it through one challenge doesn’t mean everything suddenly becomes easy.

And when you own a small business, those challenges don’t always stay at work. Sometimes you carry them home. You try to put on a smile for your family, enjoy the evening and not let the weight of everything else take away from the people you love most.

I’ve certainly had to learn how to do that better.

One of my favorite reminders these days is a simple phrase: “This too shall pass.”

In the hard seasons, it reminds me that we’ll get through them. In the good seasons, it reminds me not to get too comfortable or forget where our blessings come from.

Both have a way of pointing me back to the Lord.

And both have a way of reminding me why I started Nerve in the first place.

The people.

It’s easy to get caught up in the finances, the building, the equipment, the schedule and the hundred other things that come with running a business. But whenever things get difficult, I find myself coming back to the same question.

How can I serve people and love them well through this thing we call Nerve?

Because that’s what makes all of this worth it.

Ten years later, I’m incredibly thankful for the hard seasons. Not because I enjoyed them, but because they’ve taught me lessons I probably wouldn’t have learned any other way.

And I’m just as thankful for the good seasons, when I get to step back and celebrate what the Lord is doing in the lives of the people who walk through our doors.

Through all of it, He’s been faithful. And He’s placed some incredible people around us along the way.

This too shall pass.

And whatever season comes next, I hope I never forget why we’re here.

Chapter Seven: Through the Hard Seasons.

10/20/2026

Some of my favorite memories from Nerve have very little to do with working out.

When I think back over the last ten years, I think about our Christmas parties, where we'd get dressed up, eat way too much food, laugh about things that happened throughout the year and enjoy spending time together outside the gym. Or our annual pool party, where the kids are running around, families are hanging out and nobody has to worry about how many rounds are left in the workout.

Those are some of my favorite days of the year. Not because we did anything particularly extravagant, but because we got to enjoy the friendships that had grown inside the gym in a completely different setting.

And then there are the traditions that have become something much bigger than I ever imagined.

One of my absolute favorites is Ultimate Hero.

Back in our CrossFit days, we regularly did Hero workouts to honor fallen military members. I always appreciated the meaning behind those workouts, and somewhere along the way, we came across the idea of doing a workout on Good Friday to honor the Ultimate Hero, Jesus.

We borrowed that idea, gave it our own Nerve touch, and decided to give it a try. I had absolutely no idea we'd still be doing it ten years later, or what it would eventually mean to so many people.

I've never felt like I needed to push my faith heavily onto everyone who walks through our doors. But my faith is a huge part of who I am, and this was an opportunity to share a little of that with people in a way that felt natural to me. Something that might open the door to a conversation, or simply give someone a moment to think about something deeper.

And man, has it ever done that.

Over the years, I've watched Ultimate Hero bring people to tears. It's opened the door for incredible conversations, allowed me to share parts of my own testimony and given others opportunities to share theirs. It's become one of those workouts that is almost impossible to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it.

There are 14 rounds, and as you work your way through them, you're following the story of Jesus. You're getting tired, you're breathing hard, and you're trying to keep moving. Then you reach round 11, look up at the whiteboard and read,

"Jesus is nailed to the Cross."

Man, that gets me every time.

Because at that point, you're exhausted. You're hurting, maybe feeling a little sorry for yourself. And then you read those words and suddenly your perspective changes. Not because our workout comes anywhere close to what Jesus endured for you and me. It doesn't. But in some tiny, tiny way, it gives you a moment to reflect on His sacrifice.

My favorite part isn't even the workout itself. It's watching people experience it. Watching them work through something difficult while believing the Lord is doing something in their hearts along the way. It's hard to put into words, but if you've ever been in that room on Good Friday, you probably understand what I mean.

And to think, it all started with an idea we borrowed and decided to try. Ten years later, it's become one of the most meaningful days of our year.

I guess that's what I love about traditions. You don't always know which moments are going to stick. You try something, people show up, you have a great time, and before you know it, you've been doing it together for years.

Whether it's the emotions of Ultimate Hero, the laughter at a Christmas party, the chaos of a pool full of Nerve families, or the countless other memories we've made together, those moments have become such a special part of this journey.

Ten years ago, I thought I was opening a gym where people could come work out. I never imagined how much life we'd end up sharing together, or how many memories we'd make that had nothing to do with a barbell.

The workouts brought us together. But the moments we shared gave us something to remember together.

And man, have we made some good ones. ❤️

Chapter Six: The Moments.

10/16/2026

Somewhere along the way, it stopped being my gym.

I’m not exactly sure when it happened. Maybe it was one of those Friday night workouts, a Friendsgivmas, a Taco Ride, or one of the countless times people finished class and then stood around talking for another 37 minutes.

Or maybe it was Thanksgiving morning in 2017.

I remember looking around at a packed gym, wondering if the workout I had planned was actually going to work with that many people. Somehow, we pulled it off. Then we headed outside into the freezing cold for what became our Thanksgiving Turkey Toss tradition. And people LOVED it. Lol.

I remember looking around that morning and thinking about how incredible it was that all these people had chosen to spend part of their Thanksgiving with us.

One of the greatest blessings Nerve had from the beginning was that people came with me. Before we opened our doors, there were people who had already been training with me at the previous gym or in the garage. People I hoped would follow this crazy dream, and even some I wasn’t sure would.

But they showed up.

And when the excitement of something new started wearing off, they kept showing up. After that first year, I remember beginning to realize that this wasn’t just a dream anymore. We were building something real.

And somewhere in those early years, something began to change.

People weren’t just coming to take a class from me anymore. They were coming to see each other. They were bringing their spouses, their friends and eventually their kids. They were celebrating each other’s victories, helping each other through difficult seasons, welcoming nervous new faces and making people feel like they belonged before they even knew anyone’s name.

We had Women’s Nights, Friday Night Lights, Friendsgivmas, Fun Food Fridays, Taco Rides, Murph and pool parties, and more ridiculous memories than I could ever fit into one post. 😂 Some traditions stuck around. Others came and went. But looking back, it wasn’t really the events that made those moments special.

It was the people.

Over ten years, we’ve celebrated marriages, welcomed babies, watched kids grow up, seen friendships form and walked alongside people through some incredibly difficult things. We’ve celebrated accomplishments that had nothing to do with the gym and honored people we’ve loved and lost.

We’ve lived a lot of life together inside these walls.

One of my favorite things today is watching the next generation start to become part of Nerve. Kids who once came along with their parents are now old enough to train alongside them. And some of those parents have been here since the very beginning.

That’s pretty incredible to me.

I think about the members who have been here since Day One, and the ones who joined somewhere along the way and made this place their own. I think about the people who greet someone new without being asked, clean something up because it needs doing, bring a friend because they want them to experience Nerve, or reach out when someone is going through a hard season.

Those little things might not seem like much individually, but they’re what make a community.

And that’s something I’ve come to appreciate more and more as the years go by. I can create workouts, hire coaches, plan events and work to make Nerve the best gym it can be. But I can’t manufacture the way people choose to love and care for one another.

That’s something you all have built.

When I started this journey, I wanted to create a great place for people to work out. Ten years later, I realize what we’ve been building is so much more than that.

A place where people feel seen, known, encouraged, challenged and cared about. A place that helps people become stronger physically, but also better prepared for whatever life brings outside these walls.

And I hope that’s something we never lose.

Chapter 4 was about those early days when I thought I had to carry this whole thing myself. What I didn’t know back then was that the Lord was bringing people into this place who would eventually help carry it with me.

Somewhere along the way, it stopped being my gym. It became ours.

And I couldn’t be more thankful for that.

This couch has a story.

When I look back at the beginning days of Nerve, this old blue couch might tell the story better than just about anything else in that building.

For the first eight months, I coached every class we offered. Monday through Friday, we had classes at 5 AM, 6 AM, 8 AM, 9 AM, noon and 5:30 PM. I’d leave the house around 4:15 in the morning, get everything ready, coach throughout the day and usually make it home around 7 at night.

I’d eat dinner, spend a little time with Kelsey and the kids, go to bed and do it all again the next morning.

We only lived about 15 minutes away, but sometimes driving home between classes didn’t seem worth it. So I stayed. I worked, worked out, cleaned, answered emails, programmed workouts and occasionally crashed on this couch for a nap before the next class.

That couch was basically my second home.

And back then, there wasn’t exactly a big staff handling everything behind the scenes. I was the coach, programmer, cleaner, salesperson, maintenance guy and whatever else needed to happen that day. There was a LOT of mopping, sweeping and cleaning chalk off just about everything. I still remember those mop bucket days.

But even in those exhausting days, I absolutely loved what we were building.

And I definitely wasn’t doing it completely alone, even when it sometimes felt that way.

My business partner, Ben Williamson, was a saint. He handled so much of the business side that I didn’t know how to do. Ralph was always willing to help fix something. My sister-in-law Tess became our first little media department, and Deb was taking sweaty gym towels home to wash because we didn’t even have a washer and dryer.

Then about eight months in, a guy named James Lee walked through the doors. He told me he’d owned a gym in California for over ten years and asked if he could coach a Friday class.

SOLD. (THANKS JAMES)

James became our first coach and gave me plenty of advice along the way. Some of it I listened to. Some of it I probably should have listened to a little better. Lol. Looking back, a lot of what he told me still rings true today.

That’s one of the things I appreciate most about those early years. So many people helped carry pieces of something I was still figuring out how to build.

And somewhere along the way, something started happening. The excitement of a brand-new gym began wearing off, but people kept coming. They kept showing up, trusting us, bringing friends and making Nerve part of their lives.

I remember beginning to think, “Man, maybe we can actually do this.”

Looking at this couch now brings back so many memories. The exhaustion, the excitement, the uncertainty and the feeling that I had to give everything I had to make this dream work.

I was younger, a little more stubborn and probably a whole lot more convinced that everything depended on me than I should have been.

If I could go back and sit on that couch next to the younger version of myself, I think I’d have a few things to tell him.

Keep your eyes fixed on the Lord. Don’t get too confident. Trust your gut. Play the long game. Don’t let the fire burn so bright that you burn yourself out, but don’t ever let it go out either. Love God. Love people. In that order. Keep it simple.

And Cody…

Go home sometimes. Your babies won’t be babies forever.

The gym will still be there tomorrow. You don’t have to carry all of this by yourself. There are some incredible people the Lord is going to put around you. Let them help. Trust Him with the things you can’t control, and don’t forget to enjoy the family He’s already blessed you with.

I wish I could say I learned all of those lessons quickly. I didn’t. Some of them I’m still learning ten years later.

But man, what a journey it’s been.

And to that younger version of me, I’d probably finish with one last piece of advice.

Get some sleep, buddy. You’ve got a 5 AM class tomorrow. 😂

Before anyone else believed in Nerve, she believed in me.

When I think about the beginning of Nerve, I think about the garage, the long days, the people who showed up and all the excitement of chasing a dream. But there’s someone who was part of this story long before any of that happened.

My wife, Kelsey. ❤️

Ten years ago, we were already in the thick of raising a young family. We had Caden, and Harlow had arrived just five months before we opened Nerve. Two little kids, plenty of responsibilities, and apparently I thought that was the perfect time to say, “Hey, you know what would be a great idea? Let’s open a gym!” 😂

And somehow, she said yes.

I don’t think I fully understood back then what that yes would require of her. Every early morning I left for the gym meant she was holding things down at home. Every late evening, every financial risk, every stressful season and every crazy idea I came home excited about affected her too.

She didn’t just marry a guy who wanted to open a gym. She ended up living that dream right alongside me, whether she signed up for all of it or not.

And through it all, she believed in me.

Not because I had everything figured out. Trust me, I didn’t. Not because we knew Nerve would succeed. We had no idea what was ahead. She believed in the person I was, the things I was passionate about and what I felt the Lord was calling me to do.

Looking back, I realize there were sacrifices she made that I probably didn’t even recognize at the time. Moments when she needed more of me than I was giving. Times when my mind was at the gym even when my body was home. And through those seasons, she continued to love me, encourage me and help build the life we have today.

I’ve learned a lot about business over these ten years, but I’ve probably learned even more about being a husband, a father and understanding what actually matters most.

And the older I get, the more I realize how many of my dreams have only been possible because God gave me someone willing to dream alongside me.

Kels, thank you for believing in me when there wasn’t much evidence that this crazy idea would work. Thank you for carrying things I couldn’t see, for loving me through the stressful seasons and for building a beautiful family with me while we were figuring all of this out.

I know I haven’t always gotten the balance right. But I hope you know how grateful I am that you’ve been beside me through every version of this journey.

Before there was Nerve, there was us. And there wouldn’t be a Nerve without you.

I love you, Kels. ❤️
