What is "full depth" ?

When the apex of the hip crease passes below the top of the knee, you have achieved full depth.

What is "the apex" of the hip crease?

Well, and apex is defined as the highest point, the peak, OR pointed tip. When the hip creates a crease, that crease has a pointed tip. That pointed tip approximately the top of the thigh, where it contacts the hip, forming a crease in the worn clothing.

Now, obviously the clothing matters some- but, generally, the hip crease is plainly visible if you know what to look for.

Can you squat lower? Probably.
Should you squat lower? Probably not.

Most people will need to relax something in their body, or shift the center of mass to squat lower (in the lowbar squat). This is a disadvantage in our training goal.

Should you squat higher? In almost all cases: NO.

Eileen set a new bench PR this week. Still getting stronger, still working hard.

Not all lifters listen- but Murphy corrects them anyways....

The chin-up is better than the pull up.

Starting Strength's underlying training philosophy is to choose exercises that recruit the most total muscle mass through a full range of motion. When it comes to upper body accessory exercises, the chin-up is the king of this philosophy. The chin-up's supinated grip recruits the biceps brachii in addition to the lats, upper back, and shoulders, it engages more total muscle than a pronated pull-up.

Rippetoe’s underlying strength philosophy is to choose exercises that recruit the most total muscle mass through a full range of motion. Because the supinated grip recruits the biceps brachii in addition to the lats, upper back, and shoulders, it engages more total muscle than a pronated pull-up.

Your shoes are your connection to the floor, and that connection is how force is transfered. We advocate for weightlifting shoes when lifting weights.

And if you don't have some- we will provide them for your training session.

Injuries happen (mostly outside the gym). When Jen had to get a minor surgery on her hand, we had to come up with a way to train around it.

The rack press allows you to work around a lot of injuries and limitations, and that's our specialty.

If you have something that you think limits you from training- reach out and ask us how to modify around it. We're glad to help you learn a better way to keep training!

Probably the most misunderstood thing in deadlifting is the common advice that-
"The bar hangs from the shoulder."
and
"The shoulders are over the bar."

This is true; what isn't true is what you think the shoulder is. The shoulder includes the scapula. The bar should be directly below the SCAPULA, not the insertion of the humerus, into the scapula.

This is where so many coaches and lifters fail to understand the nuances that actually matter and get hung up on the things that do not.

We choose to be pedantic about the things that actually matter.

Andrea moves 315 like it's a warm-up. Unbelted, with casual indifference.

This is what strength training does. It helps you redefine what "hard" is.
