Thoughts on an airbag while riding?

🚨 BREAKING: This airbag for cyclists will arrive at the WorldTour in 2026

One year ago, the idea of a cycling short with an integrated airbag sounded like pure science fiction. At that time, it was just an advanced concept with prototypes and plenty of unanswered questions. Fast forward to today, and that concept is taking a massive step toward reality in professional cycling.

The Aerobag airbag system is now set to be tested by WorldTour teams during the 2026 season. This is not a bulky or restrictive device, but a wearable airbag designed specifically for elite cyclists. It integrates TPU tubes directly into a slightly modified cycling short, keeping the rider’s biomechanics intact.

The electronics and replaceable CO2 cartridge sit discreetly in a small pouch on the lower back. When a crash is detected, the system inflates in milliseconds. It protects the hips, pelvis, ribs, torso, collarbones, and neck, which are among the most vulnerable areas in high speed falls.

Unlike earlier attempts, Aerobag does not aim to turn riders into armored figures.
The goal is seamless protection without changing how cyclists race or move.

At the core of the system is a complex fall detection algorithm. It combines XYZ sensors, inertia sensors, impact detection, and magnetic references. This allows the system to distinguish normal riding movements from an actual crash.

To ensure proper deployment, the clothing includes small elastic loops to guide the airbag tubes into position. The system is also modular, meaning riders can use compatible shorts or jackets adapted for Aerobag.

Team Picnic PostNL will begin using Aerobag in training this season.
Its use in races is possible once regulatory approval is completed.
Another major WorldTour team is expected to announce adoption soon.
