It's been a while since we've had a match report due to other circumstances.
Alasdair Appleby 's 224* v Benwell Hill didn't quite get the write up it should have so lets give it a one word write up now - Superb. Then the 1s at home to Shotley had a day to forget as Haydon Mustard seen the opposition cruise to victory with an unbeaten 53. Last week, it was a real team effort in defeating Seaham Harbour with wickets shared around and also runs as Alasdair, Toby, Tyler Easton and Eddie James all scored 30+ in chasing down 175.
The last few weeks haven't been great for the 2s. Pumped by Benwell Hill, Tynemouth and Whitburn in those three weeks. Brad Lowery picking up a few wickets along the way the only highlight.
So on to today. Chester batted first at High Heworth Lane in the 1s fixture and they went along nicely. They ended their innings on 252/9. A commanding score but given how flat the wicket was, with a quick outfield and our small boundaries, it was a score at half time we were comfortable with. Tom Slane the stand out bowler with 3/55. In reply an outstanding opening partnership between Alasdair Appleby and Tyler Easton seen us up to 75/0. Wickets then fell regularly enough but the ever present was Alasdair who hit a quite magnificent 148 not out to see us through to victory. Not his normal brutal hitting type of innings, Alasdair reigned himself in to accumulate and see the lads through to a great 2 wicket win. Better than his double hundred a few weeks ago (in my opinion), this innings had everything. An absolutely superb effort.
At Chester, the 2nd XI fared a little worse off. Bowled out for 101 we were never in the game as the 2nd XI champions knocked it off 1 down.
1 more week to go and then this author can hang up his glass and hibernate for a winter 🍺 🏏
