Millwey Rise produced an impressive team performance to claim a deserved 4–2 victory at East Budleigh 2nds, despite travelling without four regular players.
Rise started brightly, playing some excellent football, and took the lead following a contentious back-pass decision against the hosts. From the resulting indirect free-kick, a delicate touch from Runu set up Ty Warren, who fired emphatically into the top corner.
East Budleigh responded quickly. Their number nine drew the hosts level with an excellent first-time lob over stand-in goalkeeper Bennett.
Millwey regained the advantage when Warren delivered a dangerous corner and Ty Allen smashed home. Moments later, East Budleigh surrendered possession straight from the restart, allowing Luke Thurlow to punish the mistake and send Rise into half-time with a 3–1 lead.
The hosts enjoyed more possession after the break, but Millwey’s defence stood firm, with Bennett providing assured support behind them. Skipper Matt Lewis made a crucial contribution at 3–1, clearing off the line to preserve Rise’s two-goal advantage.
East Budleigh reduced the deficit through a substitute as the game entered its final 20 minutes, setting up a potentially tense finish. Rise restored their two-goal cushion when another superb Warren delivery was sliced into his own net by a home defender.
Budleigh continued to threaten, and Bennett produced a crucial save to tip a clear chance onto the post. His determination, backed by a committed defensive effort, helped Millwey protect their advantage.
The hosts were later reduced to ten men following a dangerous two-footed challenge on Owen by their centre-back.
There were strong performances throughout the Millwey side, but Josh Marlow earned Man of the Match after an outstanding display. Tireless up and down the pitch, he offered a constant threat, battled for every ball and consistently came out on top in his duels.
A superb collective effort and a valuable three points for a depleted Rise squad, who will look to carry that momentum into next week’s trip to Cheriton.
