INTRODUCING LILY – An Invitation to Linger //

“Traditional canopies can be quite formal, with four corners and a large, square roof. The goal was to create a canopy that could support informal use of urban and park spaces while simultaneously creating shelter and a sense of intimacy, much like being beneath a tree. For Nørrebro Gathers at the Field, we needed something lighter, smaller, and more understated. Together with HITSA, we created LILY – a shelter scaled to fit even relatively small urban spaces,” says Sune Oslev, Partner at MASU Planning and creator of LILY.

Named after the water plant, LILY is a collaboration between HITSA and MASU Planning. The round-roof canopy offers more than just shelter from the rain or shade from the sun. It creates a sense of place and invites people to linger. It can be used on its own or combined to encourage informal stays in the park, courtyard, playground, or on the beach.

Available in two sizes, LILY features an asymmetrically positioned column formed from four sturdy tubes that radiate like veins beneath a giant leaf, evoking associations with organic and botanical forms.

Inauguration of Historical Square in Roskilde //

On Friday, 19 June at 3 o’clock, Mayor Tomas Breddam and Chair of the Planning and Technical Committee Claus Larsen will inaugurate Hestetorvet.

Everyone is welcome to join the festivities, which include music performed by 9th-grade students, hobby horse riding, and creative workshops.

Hestetorvet serves as the arrival square for Roskilde Station and forms part of a comprehensive urban development project aimed at strengthening urban life in the city centre.

As lead consultant, MASU Planning is responsible for the new design of Hestetorvet, where increased greenery and recreational value have been key focus areas. A combination of 28 new evergreen and deciduous trees and new planting beds has created a green and inviting park-like space whose appearance will change throughout the year.

To reduce the project’s climate footprint, Roskilde Municipality has prioritised reuse throughout the entire project process. The new paving primarily consists of existing cobblestones, kerbstones, and granite steps that have been removed and reused in new patterns and functions within the project.

Everything Counts – Acting Locally for Global Impact //

To enhance biological diversity, the UN, through the Convention on Biological Diversity, has designated 22 May as the annual International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB).

For individuals and companies alike, addressing biodiversity loss can feel overwhelming.

To emphasize that meaningful change begins at a local scale, “Acting Locally for Global Impact” is the theme of the 2026 edition of IDB. It highlights that reversing biodiversity loss depends on the strength of local actions — the commitment of communities, organizations, and governments working together.

On May 26, Malin Blomqvist will present The Enchanting as a Development Strategy at Build for Biodiversity.

Through projects such as the Biodiversity Guide for Helsinki, Fingerplan 2.0, H.C. Andersen’s Garden, Töölöviksparken, and Rosendal Square, she will showcase how we design green spaces that support both people and biodiversity.

To celebrate IDB — and as a warm-up to the conference — you can read a brand-new interview with Malin, where she shares her thoughts on how to develop green spaces that increase biodiversity.

As a bonus, you’ll find out who inspired her to pursue a career in landscape architecture — and which animal she thinks she would be if she weren’t a Homo sapiens.

Reminder: MASU Planning at Build for Biodiversity //

“Through a selection of our projects, participants will gain insight into how we work strategically with green spaces to provide citizens with a diversity of recreational and nature-based experiences. Personally, I am also looking forward to being inspired by how my peers and other experts create green solutions in their projects.” — Malin Blomqvist, Partner, MASU Planning

On May 26, Malin will present 'The Enchanting as a Development Strategy' at Build for Biodiversity.

Through projects such as H.C. Andersen’s Garden (Odense, Denmark), Töölöviksparken (Helsinki, Finland), and Rosendal Square (Uppsala, Sweden), she will showcase how we create green spaces that support both people and biodiversity.

The conference will be held in Danish and is organized by Insight Events, the company behind Building Green, BIM World Copenhagen, Build in Wood, and more.

Arctic Landscapes //

A couple of weeks ago Qaqortoq Airport officially opened.

As sub-consultants to ZESO Architects our landscape design has four distinctive features:

A) Functionality is key: Our primary objective was to optimise the airport infrastructure, so that the passengers can access the airport in the easiest manner.

B) Using local materials to reduce costs: Shipping materials to Greenland is extremely expensive, so all the materials used in the landscape consist of locally sourced crushed bedrock.

C) Handling melting water on the surface. In Greenland digging sewers to handle excess melting water is hard task - the solution is a water management system that handles water locally on the surface.

D) The landscape speaks for itself: The local landscape is impressive and magnificent, so we have intentionally done as little as possible to interfere with its natural beauty.

For South Greenland, Qaqortoq Airport is key to creating new opportunities for tourism, business, community life and regional growth.

Thanks to all collaborators and the client for a smooth collaborative process.

MAKI – A New Cultural Arena in Poland //

Yesterday, Gauthier Durey, Sune Oslev, and Aliaksei Zanouski (MASU Planning) were in Poland, where they, together with Kengo Kuma and Marcin Sapeta (Kengo Kuma and Associates Dr. Eng. Andrzej Truszczyńsk (President of TKHolding - Architecture • BIM • VR), and Alan Burden (Structed Environment) presented our winning proposal for a new cultural Centre in Rzeszów.

MAKI – Międzynarodowa Arena Kultury i Integracji (International Arena of Culture and Integration) will become a multifunctional venue, comprising, among other things, a library, concert hall, conference facilities, educational zones, rehearsal rooms, rooftop gardens and inviting urban spaces.

The new cultural centre is designed as a spiral-shaped building that brings all functions together around a centrally located foyer with a skylight. MAKI is intended to become the city’s public meeting place, and users’ movement through the building symbolises a journey of learning through literature, knowledge and culture.

MASU Planning is responsible for the landscape, and Gauthier Durey, associate partner and Head of Planning, says:

“We have developed a landscape project that serves as an outdoor extension of the library’s indoor facilities, offering spaces for play, culture, contemplation, and relaxation in the open air. Together, the ground-level landscape and rooftop landscapes create a cohesive, inclusive public realm where nature, culture, and everyday life meet in a series of spaces that make nature an integrated part of the experience.”

The winning competition project, “Whirl of Words”, was created by an international team: Schick Architekci by TKHolding, Kengo Kuma & Associates, MASU Planning, Structured Environment, and Kin Creatives.

MAKI is the new name for the project.

MASU Planners in Ruhr //

Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, Neustadt, Zollverein, Ruhr Museum, Nordsternpark, Tiger & Turtle, Mariendom, Wuppertal Schwebebahn and Museum Insel Hombroich.

These are just some of the projects we had the opportunity to experience first-hand when MASU Planners from Copenhagen and Helsinki met in the Ruhr district for our study trip at the end of April.

The study trip was the perfect mixture of gaining new inspiration for our projects, informal socializing and – thanks to the beautiful and warm weather – laying the foundation for our summer tans.
