Trigger warning: the following post talks about bullying, aggressive behaviour and harassment.
Last night, I kicked somebody out of the gym after being made aware they made a member feel unsafe and uncomfortable.
I would like to express my gratitude and admiration to the victim of this deplorable behavior for having the strength and courage to approach one of our coaches to let them know of what happened.
I would also like to thank our coaches, especially Roxie, May and Maaike for being so approachable so that somebody else can feel safe enough to let them know of such behaviour.
We have built a safe space, especially for women and the LGBTQ+ community. It is a priority that we only allow members of good character to train with us. At times, someone of questionable character slips through my vetting and I apologize for that. When alerted about any behaviour that violates our safe space, I will, without hesitation, take swift action.
If anyone ever feels unsafe, uncomfortable or harassed please do not hesitate to let me or one of the other coaches know. I am understanding that you may not feel comfortable approaching me, but Roxie, May or Maaike are very willing to be a safe ear and will take responsible and immediate action to protect our community.
I ask everyone to check their words, their actions, their behaviour in person and online. Are you being supportive & encouraging? Are you contributing to the development of others? Are you a productive member of the team? Really check yourself.
I WILL NOT HESITATE TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST ANYONE THAT BEHAVES IN A MANNER THAT MAKES OTHERS FEEL UNSAFE.
My apologies that this happened. My apologies that I have to address such horrible behaviour. Your safety is my top priority, whether during training/sparring and especially if you feel you are being targeted by aggression, bullying or harassment.
If you have any questions or if you would like to chat or talk about experiences, your coaches and myself will always be in your corner. Please feel free and safe to approach any of us.
