MEET THE EQUIPMENT: LIFE FITNESS MULTI-STATION

This machine has several stations that let you work different muscle groups, all in one setup.

Whether you’re training your back, chest, shoulders or arms, there are plenty of exercise options to choose from.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:
✅ Check your setup and attachment before starting.
✅ Choose a weight you can control throughout the movement.
✅ Keep your movements smooth instead of relying on momentum.
✅ If you’re unsure how to use a station, ask us for a hand.

TRY: Explore a station you haven’t used before. We’ll be breaking down the different sections of this machine in upcoming posts!

BEGINNER GYM TIP 💡

Rest between sets.

You don’t have to rush from one set straight into the next. Giving your muscles time to recover can help you get more out of your workout.

Aim to:

✅ Take a break between sets
✅ Catch your breath before starting again
✅ Make sure you can maintain good form
✅ Give yourself more rest when you need it
✅ Don’t worry about how long someone else is resting

Your workout doesn’t need to be a race.

Take the time you need so you can do your next set well.

MEET THE EQUIPMENT: HEX BAR / TRAP BAR

Ever used the hex bar?

You may also hear it called a trap bar. It’s a versatile piece of equipment that can be used for exercises like deadlifts, carries and squats.

Unlike a traditional barbell deadlift, you stand inside the bar and hold the handles at your sides. This gives you a different setup than a straight bar and can be a great option for training your legs, glutes and back.

A few things to remember:

✅ Start with a weight you can control.
✅ Set your feet comfortably inside the bar before you lift.
✅ Keep your chest up and your back in a strong, neutral position.
✅ Push through the floor as you stand up, rather than trying to pull the weight up with your back.
✅ Keep the weight controlled throughout the movement.
✅ If you’re new to the hex bar, ask us to walk you through the setup and movement.

It’s a simple piece of equipment, but there are lots of ways to use it.

Yesterday was the Phoenix Trail Races 50km in London.

After dropping out at 30km at Sulphur Springs earlier this year, I wanted another shot at the 50km. It was disappointing not to finish that one, but it gave me the push I needed to get back out there and try again.

At 55, these races don’t get any easier, and putting in the training takes a lot of time and effort. But I’m not ready to slow down just yet. 50km on the trails is tough, both physically and mentally, so it feels good to see that hard work pay off.

The weather was perfect, and a shot of Fireball at one of the aid stations certainly helped break things up!

Crossed the finish line in 5:59:33, finishing 34th and in the top half of the field.

I’m pretty proud of this one. It feels good to come back after a disappointing race and get the finish I was looking for.

I’m thinking I might be done with these 50km runs for a while, but knowing me, I’ll probably be signing up for another one before long.

BEGINNER GYM TIP 💡

Focus on consistency, not perfection.

You don’t need every workout to be perfect to make progress.

Aim to:

✅ Show up regularly
✅ Follow a simple routine
✅ Use good form
✅ Make small improvements over time
✅ Give yourself time to recover

Some workouts will feel great, and others won’t. What matters most is continuing to build the habit.

Progress comes from what you do consistently, not from one perfect workout.

MEET THE EQUIPMENT: LEG EXTENSION + LEG CURL

This machine gives you two exercises in one: leg extensions and leg curls.

Leg extension: works the front of your thighs, primarily your quadriceps.

Leg curl: works the back of your thighs, primarily your hamstrings.

A few things to remember when using it:

✅ Adjust the seat and pads to fit you properly before starting.
✅ Make sure the pad is positioned correctly for the exercise you’re doing.
✅ Use a weight you can control through the whole movement.
✅ Don’t rush the reps or let the weight drop between repetitions.
✅ Focus on controlling the movement rather than trying to move as much weight as possible.

It’s a convenient way to train both the front and back of your legs without having to move to a different machine.

Have you used both exercises on this machine?

BEGINNER GYM TIP 💡

Start lighter than you think.

Especially when you’re trying a new exercise, don’t worry about picking the heaviest weight you can move.

Start with a weight that lets you:

✅ Get through all your reps with good form
✅ Control the weight the entire time
✅ Complete the movement through a comfortable range of motion
✅ Feel like you could still do a couple more reps when you’re finished

Once you’re comfortable with the exercise, you can gradually increase the weight.

The goal isn’t to see how much you can lift on your first try. It’s to find a weight you can actually work with.

MEET THE EQUIPMENT: Air Bike 🚴‍♀️

You’ve probably seen the air bike at the gym, but have you actually used it?

Unlike a regular stationary bike, the air bike uses both your arms and legs, so you’re working your upper and lower body at the same time.

The harder you pedal and push, the more resistance you get. There’s no resistance level to set, you control the intensity yourself.

It’s a good option for:
✅ Short cardio intervals
✅ Adding conditioning to a strength workout
✅ A quick full-body workout
✅ Warming up before lifting

Try this:
Pedal easy for 30 seconds, then go harder for 15 seconds. Repeat 6 to 8 times.

Have you used the air bike at Smart Fitness Studio?

BEGINNER GYM TIP 💡

Adjust the machine before you add weight.

If you’re new to the gym, it’s easy to sit down at a machine, put the pin in, and start your set.

But taking a minute to adjust the seat, back pad, handles or leg pads can make a big difference.

The machine should be set up for your body, not whoever used it before you.

If you’re not sure how to adjust something, ask us. We’d much rather help you get set up properly than have you guessing.

Next time you use a new machine, take a minute to get the setup right before you start your first set.
