Stonehouse Lake

Stonehouse Lake Small, private lake, surrounded by Crown land and Biosphere and protected lands.

My family's history of Stonehouse (formerly Beaver) Lake, as I know it:

My Mother's Uncle Albert was friends with the doctor who owned the property, and used to come fishing and hunting at the lake with a bunch of other guys. At some point in the late 30's or early 40's the doctor decided he wanted to sell the property, and offered it first to the guys in his hunting and fishing "club". Great Unc

le Albert approached my grandparents (Mom's folks) and asked if they would lend him the money he needed to buy the property. They said no, but they would buy it and when he could, he could buy it back from them, which he never did. Other interesting tidbits: When my mother was a child and they came to the Lake:
-Highway 69 was a gravel road for most of the journey;
-they had to leave the car at a landing on BLACKSTONE Lake and ROW through both Blackstone and Crane Lakes. Mom used to say that they had to be good packers....there was no "running up to town" if they forgot something.
-they ate well, as my grandparents and uncles were fantastic fisher people....although I'm sure they supplemented with a lot of canned and preserved food to get them through.

Well folks….we’re in. But the mess is just begun!! Many thanks to the Carano Crew and Rick DeVouge.

As previously reported, it’s going to take some work to get into Stonehouse Lake! Plans are in the works for the Carano Crew to clear us out soon! Stay tuned!! The best news is that, from cross lake viewing, the cabin appears unscathed!!

Might be a minute before we get to Stonehouse Lake. Please be patient.

DON"T TOUCH!!! These terrors are covered in the same toxin that blowfish have!

DON"T CUT or BREAK UP!! You are just creating more hammerhead worms. If you do have to dispose of one use tweezers or tongs and put it in a bag or container with salt or rubbing alcohol.

I hear they're already back! Seems humans have started emulating the mating trends of loons!! HAHA.

The Loon Preservation Committee works to preserve loons and their habitats in New Hampshire through monitoring, research, management, and public education.

It’s almost cottage season! In the meantime, here’s an interesting tidbit!!

Did someone spill pepper all over the snow? Take a closer look – those little dark flecks are actually snow fleas! 🔍🤔

The snow flea is a species of springtail, which is a tiny insect that lives in damp soils. Snow fleas become active as soon as the ground begins to thaw. Late winter and early spring are great times of year to see them because their dark-coloured bodies stand out against the white snow ❄️

Despite their name, they are not actually fleas and are harmless to people and animals. The “flea” part of their name comes from their ability to jump several centimeters into the air! Snow fleas jump so high thanks to a special forked body part called a furcula. The furcula is what puts the "spring" in springtail!

Aside from being fun to watch, snow fleas are important in the ecosystem. They eat things like decomposing logs and leaves. This unlocks nutrients to make them available in the soil for growing plants to use. 🍃🌱
