People Watching. No Barking!

This is what training looks like when it starts to transfer into everyday life.
In this video, Teddy calmly watches people getting out of vehicles and walking along the street—a situation that previously caused him to bark and pull.

He still has some excitement and pulling energy, but he is able to respond to the U-turn redirection and stay connected with his handler. Most importantly, he remains alert without becoming reactive.

Progress doesn't mean Teddy will never get excited. It means he has learned what to do when he does.

One of the biggest signs of progress is seeing Teddy make good choices around other dogs.

In this video, Teddy is on a long leash with Daisy and Charlie. Notice his slow, calm approach to Daisy and how relaxed the dogs are together.

Earlier in Teddy's training, we worked on reading body language, respecting other dogs' space, managing excitement, and staying connected with his people. Here, we're seeing those skills come together.

Training isn't about making Teddy interact with every dog. It's about giving him the skills and confidence to approach appropriately, respect boundaries, and remain calm.

This is a great example of how those small steps in training can make a difference in real life.

Here's another thinking game demonstrated by Iggy.

All you need is a box with a small hole in the top and a few treats. The hole should be small enough that your dog can't get their mouth inside. The goal is to encourage them to problem-solve and figure out how to reach the treat.

If your dog is nervous about putting their head near or into a small space, start with treats outside the box. Gradually move the treats closer and then inside as your dog becomes more comfortable.

If your dog comes back to you looking for more treats, show them your empty hands. They'll learn that the treats aren't with you and that they need to keep searching.

Thinking games are a great way to build focus, confidence, and problem-solving skills.

Trainer's Notes: Learning to Read Dog Body Language

A note before watching: This interaction is vocal and may sound intense, but neither dog made physical contact and no dogs were injured. The barking and growling are part of how the dogs were communicating

One of the most important things a dog guardian can learn is how to read their dog's body language and vocalizations.

When I first watched Teddy and Daisy interacting, I missed some important signals. When I rewatched the video, I noticed that Daisy was trying to create space. Her head turn was a calming signal, her low growl was a warning, and when she tried to move under her person's knee, she was telling us she wasn't comfortable with Teddy being so close.

Teddy was excited and frustrated, and his body was stiffer than I initially realized. I also realized that I had given the wrong advice in the moment. If I had recognized Daisy's signals sooner, the interaction could have been avoided.

Learning to read dog body language is a skill, just like any other skill. The more we practice, the better we become at noticing those small cues—and the better we can respond to what our dogs are telling us.

Walking a nervous dog who pulls around corners? They might just be afraid of what they can't see ahead.

Try this game-changer technique to build confidence:

Have your dog sit and stay before the turn, keeping the leash loose.

Step forward and peek around the corner yourself to ensure the path is safe.

Once you confirm the area is clear, call your dog over to rejoin you.

Taking the lead to check the environment helps a nervous dog realize you have things under control, making walks much less stressful.

Managing On-Leash Reactivity

High-energy reactions are often driven by frustration and a desire to greet other dogs. To keep walks calm and successful, try these core strategies:

Create Distance: Move to a threshold where the dog is interested but not barking.

Redirect & Play: Use a toy or game to "take the steam out" after a pent-up encounter. A treat right on the nose works perfectly for guidance.

Turn Around to Reset: If a dog becomes over-excited and begins actively scanning for a distraction, physically turn them around to break the focus.

Encourage Sniffing: Once a tense situation passes, offer a longer leash. Putting their nose down naturally lowers adrenaline and aids recovery.

Manage Introductions: For unfamiliar dogs, start quite a ways away. Let them catch each other's scent safely before any direct interaction.

Managing high energy and overexcitement during walks can be challenging for many dogs. Implementing structured boundaries can help ease transitions and improve behaviour.

Pause and Reset: If your dog gets overly excited, stop and ask them to pause to help them transition out of that high-energy state.

Ignore Demand Barking: When they bark for your attention, walk in the opposite direction so they learn barking doesn't get them what they want.

Let Them Sniff: When you reach a great sniffing spot, give them plenty of leash to explore and clear their mind

Leash Training Tips

Effective leash training relies on smart practice rather than long walks. You can structure your next routine using these five professional tips:

1.Micro-sessions: Do not target a perfect 30-minute walk. Use landmarks instead. Practice focused walking from one tree to the next light pole, then allow your dog to relax.�

2. The U-Turn rule: The moment your dog pulls forward during focused sections, calmly turn around and walk the opposite way. This teaches them that pulling moves them away from their goals.�

3. Vary leash length: Keep your dog close and focused during one landmark section. Reward them with a longer, looser leash for a sniffing break on the next.�

4. Clear verbal cues: Avoid tugging. Pair your movements with a specific word, like "Let’s go" or "With me", so your dog knows exactly when to follow.�

5. Small dog guidance: Handlers often pull small dogs because of their size. This physical tension causes frustration and grumpiness. Use the same verbal cues and boundaries you would use for a large dog.�

One of the best parts of having a companion dog is getting out and experiencing the world together.

Walks give dogs the opportunity to exercise, explore, meet people and other dogs, and practice the skills they're learning in everyday situations.

For Teddy, these real-life experiences are an important part of his training. The goal is to help him stay connected, manage excitement, and make good choices in the world around him.

Teddy's Training Journey – Building a More Reliable Recall

As Teddy's recall improves, it's time to add a new challenge—distance and patience.

Start by asking your dog to sit and stay. Take just a few steps backward while keeping your eyes on them, then give your recall cue, such as "Come."

Many dogs find it difficult to watch their person walk away and will get up before they're called. That's perfectly normal! The key is to make the exercise easy enough for your dog to succeed. If Teddy gets up too soon, simply reset, take fewer steps, and try again.

By gradually increasing the distance, Teddy learns to wait for direction before making a choice. This builds impulse control, confidence, and a more reliable recall—because coming when called isn't just about running to you, it's about listening first.
