Behold the "glacier chaser," a rare subspecies of kayaker easily identified by its complete inability to admire a glacier from a reasonable, dry, insured distance. 🧊

Most tourists do this the sensible way - heated boat deck, camera zoomed in, snack in hand. The glacier chaser finds this deeply unsatisfying and instead spends months folding an entire sea kayak into a single duffel bag just to paddle up close enough to hear the thing groan.

Once on site, it assembles its kayak on a gravel beach with cold hands, gets it slightly wrong the first time, and pushes off toward a wall of ice that is actively falling apart. Friends and family call this a poor decision. The glacier chaser calls it Tuesday.

Officially classified as "Paddlerus glacialis," this species is easy to spot: small boat, smaller sense of self-preservation, permanent grin once it realizes how tiny it actually is next to ten thousand years of compressed ice.

It remains threatened by group tours, glass-bottom boats, and comfortable footwear.

Field question for fellow specimens: what's the closest you've paddled to something that could've ended your trip early? 👇

Happy paddling!

Improve Your Forward Stroke With a Relaxed Grip ✋🛶

Gripping the paddle too tightly wastes energy and makes your forward stroke less efficient.

Keep your hands relaxed, let torso rotation power the stroke, and imagine sweeping your fingertips across the horizon.

This simple kayak technique can help you paddle farther with greater control and less fatigue.

Bringing connection to every community she visits. 🪶

Suzanne Otterson is a dentist and passionate paddler who travels to remote communities across Canada to provide her services — and she never leaves her TRAK behind. For her, paddling isn't just transportation between visits; it's a way to explore and truly understand the places and people she serves.

These photos were captured during her recent work in Nunavut — the birthplace of the kayak itself, and a place where this connection runs especially deep.

We can't wait to welcome Suzanne back to the TRAK Owners Symposium next week! 🤝

😰 Capsizing is every new sea kayaker's fear — here's how to stay upright.

⛵ If you've never paddled a real sea kayak before, the first time might surprise you.

⚡ Unlike flat-bottomed kayaks that prioritize stability over speed, the TRAK has a V-shaped hull that maximizes efficiency and straight-line tracking — so you can go further with fewer corrective strokes.

🧠 To handle this trade-off, we encourage you to master your bracing, especially before taking on any big objectives.

💪 Being able to catch yourself before you flip in rough water (or when leaning over to check out sea life below) is empowering — and anxiety-relieving, for sure!

🎯 Practice these techniques in calm conditions first, then work your way up to performing them when you need them most.

Loaded kayak. Dumping surf. One wrong move.

Ready for landing? When conditions are rough or the beach you want to land at is dumping surf, it's best to stop, plan, and take your time. Surf landings are fun, but they also pose some of the biggest risks to kayakers — especially when your boat is fully loaded.

🏄 Send in the lead paddler first
While the rest of the group stays behind the surf break, let the lead paddler navigate the landing solo. They'll find the best spot to land and use hand signals to call the others in — one at a time.

⏳ Don't ride the waves in — let them pass under you
Approach slowly and intentionally avoid surfing waves into shore. Follow them in instead. This protects your kayak from being thrown onto shore and reduces the risk of personal injury.

🪖 Wear a helmet
Any time there's potential to capsize with a head injury risk underwater, gear up.

📈 Practice progressively
Start with smaller waves before moving into serious breakers.

No engine. No noise. Just ice, water, and a boat that folds down small enough to get here in the first place.

Meet Ivan (), a kayak guide and outfitter who knows these icy waters well. This is his backyard, but that doesn't mean he takes risks lightly.

Venturing into the ice flow requires constant awareness of what is solid, what is moving, and what is attached to the ocean surface. It's times like these when having a local guide makes all the difference.

If you dream of paddling in the Arctic - where kayaks were first invented - consider reaching out to our team to learn more about travelling with your TRAK.

For 20 years, we've been building kayaks meant to disappear into a backpack and reappear in moments like this - so don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions!
