What if healing didn't mean sitting in the hardest feeling until it passed?

In somatic experiencing, there's a concept called pendulation. Instead of pushing straight through distress, you move back and forth between a hard sensation and something that feels neutral or even good, in small doses your nervous system can actually handle. Over time, this teaches your body that discomfort has an edge, and that it's safe to come back from it.

If sitting with hard feelings has always felt like too much, there's a gentler way in.

Who told you healing was supposed to happen on a schedule?

There's no clinical timeline that says you should be over something by now. Healing moves at the pace your nervous system can actually integrate, not the pace your calendar, your family, or your own impatience would prefer. Moving slowly isn't falling behind. It's often exactly what safety requires.

You're allowed to take the time this actually takes.

By the end of the day, some people have spent more energy looking organized than actually getting anything done.

Masking is the effort many ADHD adults put into appearing put-together, on time, and in control, even when the internal experience feels like scrambling the whole time. It's exhausting precisely because it's invisible work, nobody sees the effort, just the result. Over time, that gap between how capable you look and how depleted you feel can wear on a person in ways that are hard to explain to people who haven't lived it.

If this sounds familiar, you're not imagining the exhaustion.

You clock out, but your nervous system doesn't always get the memo.

For healthcare workers and first responders, hypervigilance isn't a personality trait, it's an occupational skill your body built to keep you safe on shift. The problem is that skill doesn't come with an off switch. It keeps scanning for the next emergency long after the emergency has passed, which is why rest can feel harder to access than it should.

Understanding this is the first step toward teaching your body it's actually safe to stand down.

For a lot of people, rest doesn't feel restful. It feels like something to justify. 🎯

The guilt that shows up during rest often has nothing to do with laziness. It usually comes from a long-standing belief that your worth is tied to output, and that stopping means falling behind.

Rest that comes with guilt still counts as rest, but untangling that guilt is often where the real work happens.

One small thing goes wrong, and suddenly it feels like everything is wrong.

That's emotional flooding. It happens when your nervous system gets overwhelmed past its capacity and stops being able to sort a small stressor from a big one. In that state, a spilled coffee and a genuine crisis can feel identical in your body.
