NICO Coach & Music Man

NICO Coach & Music Man "Helping you find your next adventure" | Professional Life Coach | Musician | Encourager | Adventurist I am a coach (not a therapist).

One of my best friends inspired me to get into coaching because he walked with me & coached me through a pretty wild time in my life when I lost my wife of 17 years to cancer. After losing my dad in 2008 to the “C word” as well, I felt the power and healing of my community… the warmth and comfort of the people in my life who were willing to ask me the hard questions but most importantly walk with

me. Really walk with me… and I believe that this is the essence of coaching. Nico Boesten, CPCC
I also experienced the power of coaching & community in my journey as I got remarried and wrestled through a short, magical and painful relationship which ended in divorce. I started my official training with the Co-Active Training Institute in 2013 but I have always had an intense desire to see people become fully alive. I really do love people and get especially fired up about seeing people move forward & beyond their “stuckness”. In 1995 (right after high school) I moved to Holland to work with international teams & the addicts on the streets of Amsterdam. From there I started dabbling in the music industry and then spent the better part of the next 10 years in the US of A in the non-profit / church world working mainly with youth. I was writing & recording music with my band while also working at being a good husband & raising two small kids. Along the way I have been a part of starting & building several companies including a web (Sayvee), design (Fair Trade Creative), T-shirt (Motown Rags), and most recently an audio visual company (New Horizon Productions since 2012). Some of my most proud moments & accomplishments have been:

raising my daughter & son
leading short term mission teams to 14 different countries
taking a 30 day, 13,000 km pilgrimage driving across the continent
recording an album with my band in Nashville
longboarding 60 km (from Kelowna to Penticton)
riding to the top of both Mount St. Helens & Mount Rainier on my motorbike on the same day with one of my best buds
kind of landing a backflip off of a bike into a lake
I currently live in Kelowna, BC (the Hawaii of Canada) as a quasi-empty-nester & unbelievably proud father of 2 stellar humans. I still play the odd house concert but mainly keep the music to my living room walls where I quite often strum my guitar or tickle the ivories of my 1978 Fender Rhodes piano. Coaching is mainly focused on digging into where you are now and where you’d like to go or be. My “specialties” are based on my life experiences & training which fall into 4 general areas:
Adventure & Taking Risks
Business & Leadership
Dealing with Failure & Loss
Creativity & the Arts
I like to work with clients for 3 months meeting 2x per month with 50 minute sessions.

Here's my latest recording written about a woman I loved… inspired by Esther Perel and her research on relationships where she shared that in almost every relationship, one person is afraid to lose themselves and the other is afraid to lose the other person.

The opening line “if stress is a killer” was inspired by Gabor Maté where he explains that stress literally causes damage to your cells and is directly linked to many different kinds of chronic illness including cancer.

This song flowed out of me as I wrestled to know if my current relationship was healthy... whether it would work for us both to be free to be ourselves while we fought to love each other... ideally with our whole hearts.

There was a time in our relationship where I was told that she felt "watered down"... this burned me. I don't believe it was meant to be hurtful but the fact that me being me wasn't allowing her to be her was confusing, frustrating, and disheartening. We both fought to try and allow each other to be free and the reality is that there were many times when I truly did feel very supported.

Aggghhhhh... relationships can be tricky eh? And I have heard many couples share a similar story. I think that one of the most important keys is to constantly be open, honest & vulnerable... with yourself and each other. And although this particular relationship didn't end up in a happily ever after fairy tale, I thought it may be important for people to hear (and my current partner actually really encouraged me to record it).

FUN FACT: "RIVER" was written on a picnic table at Schoolhouse Beach on the California coastline during my road trip in 2024 as I took a Leadership course down there.

Massive thanks to Shona Lynne & David W. Swanson for their contributions on this along with Daniel Nevins for the artwork

Ahem, I bequeath you with my new single "WORTHY" today for your audible enjoyment. Inspired by a conversation with my partner, I wrote this for her and from her perspective as a bit of a prayer. This theme of "knowing your worth" seems to be a common human battle... may you know you are worthy.

And Happy Valentines Day ya beauties.

I have soooo much respect for these ladies and the work they do at the Karis Support Society... helping women struggling with addiction and mental health challenges. I have worked with them over the past few years doing some coaching and leading workshops and they are the real deal.

Soooo, for part 3 of my TELUS STORYHIVE series "UNstuck - finding hope in loss" I interviewed a couple of the directors and got some sweet chunks of wisdom.

They share about how Karis has helped thousands of women find hope over the past 2 decades... check out their secrets...

Here's episode 2/6 of my series "UNstuck | finding hope in loss" with my good buddy Brad Pedersen. He's not only an author but a wildly successful entrepreneur but he's got an inspiring story of going from multiple bankruptcies to a 9 figure exit. He shares how he found hope in some of his darkest times and offers some sage advice on how to get through the storms. This man is a humble, inspiring man of integrity and ALSO an insane mountain biker... he is a pillar and connector in our community and I want the world to hear his story.

Brad Pedersen is a successful entrepreneur who lives in Kelowna, BC who has experienced his fair share of epic wins (including a $100m exit) and colossal fai...

Super fired up to start sharing this 6 series podcast called "UNstuck | finding hope in loss". Here's a clip from the first episode where I interview Kim Unrau... an emotional health coach who talks about the most impactful and most important thing he needed when he was in the emotional fetal position.

With almost 30 years under his belt of helping people get “unstuck”, Kim Unrau is an “emotional tow truck driver” based out of Kelowna, BC. His professional ...

“IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME” – a 9 year old grieving his mom

In April 2024, I picked up my phone and started to record myself as I began to feel a wave of grief pass over me after visiting a buddy of mine in the hospital. In the bed next to my buddy was a father with serious head injuries and broken legs after finding out he lost his wife & unborn child in the same accident. The quote of their 9 year old who just lost his mom pleading to take her place got me right in the feelers.

What a heart.

And I’ve felt that same ache of wanting to take the place of my dad losing his life… and my late wife, Ingrid.

Here’s me processing this live and you’ll see where I end up.
