SPOTLIGHT: Jervis Bay NSW

This site was recently recognised on a global scale as a critical habitat for Grey Nurse Sharks by an international panel of scientists through the Important Shark & Ray Area (ISRA) Project. Your photos made this milestone possible! Thank you to all our citizen scientists sharing photos from this site, including John Tranter for the photo shown here.

But recognition is only the first step. This site is still not adequately protected. To truly save the Grey Nurse Shark, their habitats must have full protection.

While this habitat has some form of protection, as it falls within the Booderee National Park, the zoning is much smaller than what is needed. CSIRO research shows that Grey Nurse Sharks need a 1.5km radius of protection to stay safe during their night-time feeding. The area of protection granted around this habitat is only a fraction of that size.

ACT NOW: Australia has committed to the global 30x30 goal—protecting 30% of our oceans by 2030. We need to make sure this promise results in real sanctuaries, not just lines on a map. Write to your local MP today. Tell them that the Jervis Bay habitat should receive much higher levels of protection. For 30x30 to be effective, it must include our most critical shark habitats with meaningful, adequately sized areas with no-fishing protections.
