🏓 What is pimple rubber — and when are you ready for it?

Pimple rubber, often called pips, is a table tennis rubber where the little pimples face outward instead of being hidden underneath the smooth topsheet.

There are different types:

Short pimples
Great for fast blocking, hitting, counter-attacking and taking the ball early.

Long pimples
Used more for disruption, spin reversal, chopping and changing the pace of the rally.

So, when are you ready to try pimple rubber?

You might be ready if you:

✔️ Have a clear playing style
✔️ Like blocking, hitting or disrupting your opponent’s rhythm
✔️ Struggle less with basic control and can already rally consistently
✔️ Understand that pips are not a “shortcut” — they still need practice
✔️ Want to build a game around variation, placement and timing

For most beginners, we usually recommend learning the basics with inverted rubber first. Once your strokes, timing and ball control are more consistent, pimple rubber can become a very effective option.
