Monday night, I had the honor of promoting .msh to black belt. Malcolm has been training with me for approximately nine years — starting as a white belt and growing into an incredible teacher, leader, and friend. There are countless places to learn skills, and there are many great instructors in every field of life, but all too often the relationship between teacher and student is purely transactional. That has never been the case here. Over the years, Malcolm has been an integral part of my academy — a training partner, a friend, and now a shining example of what it means to lead with integrity and heart. One of the things I treasure most about Malcolm is the personal relationship we’ve developed over the years. In an atmosphere that fosters true camaraderie and friendship, we’ve had countless conversations about our lives, how we view the world, and what we expect from people. Grappling naturally requires a certain vulnerability, and Malcolm is someone who extends that trust and openness both on and off the mat. He has been a dependable student and friend — someone I can always count on. I feel incredibly fortunate to have now promoted five black belts who started with me as white belts, and Malcolm embodies everything that makes that journey so special. He not only has the technical ability, but he’s also grown into a teacher who inspires, guides, and uplifts everyone around him. As Malcolm starts another chapter in his life in Colorado, it will be exciting to see him continue to grow and thrive — both as a black belt and as the incredible person he has become. Congratulations, Malcolm. You’ve earned this, and I am proud to call you student, colleague, and friend. 📸 .panic
