Even before I started my physical therapy doctoral program, I knew I wanted to work in women’s health.
But when it came to my own pelvic health, I had a mixed experience with providers, and a lot of important questions went unanswered.

First, some definitions...
Energy Availability is the energy your body has left for essential functions (hormone production, bone health, immune function) after accounting for exercise and activity. It’s primarily about calorie intake versus output, but sleep and stress management play a role too.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) occurs in athletes when there isn’t enough energy available to support those essential functions.

Low Energy Availability (LEA) puts people, especially athletes or very active individuals, at risk for bone injuries, GI dysfunction, urinary leakage, cycle irregularities, fertility challenges, and decreased performance.

Athletes and highly active people have higher energy requirements than those who are more sedentary (but we should all be moving daily for our health 😁).

LEA is also a source of stress on the body. It can disrupt the autonomic nervous system, raise cortisol, and make it harder to manage stress overall.
Why does this matter for your pelvic health?
    •    LEA can decrease gut motility, causing constipation, which increases pressure in the pelvis.
    •    LEA can negatively impact hormone and cycle health, affecting fertility and the ability to conceive.
    •    LEA in female athletes is linked to stress urinary incontinence, on top of the pelvic floor’s already increased load from training.

Fitness and performance are about more than lifting heavy and running hard. Training falls under the umbrella of overall health, alongside fueling, stress management, and sleep.

LEA/RED-S is something I myself experienced personally, not just something I know clinically about. Stay tuned for my story in Part 2b!

Hello! I am Elizabeth Lauten, a pelvic health and orthopedic physical therapist specializing in female pelvic health and perinatal care. I am based in Lacey & Olympia, WA. Here is a fun snapshot into my clinical work, we are going to see what’s inside my bag!

🧠 A quick clinical correction on the pelvic model: You can appreciate the space in the pelvis and how when the re**um fills, the uterus swells, the bladder is full, or when there is inflammation/swelling, there is simply less space (rather than it being “tighter”).

🙌 Shoutout to my support team & community:
Thank you to bryn (https://www.instagram.com/the.ease.project/) for helping me film! Bryn supports business owners by taking tasks off their plate. Check out her business!

Before I became a pelvic PT, I had my own mixed experience with providers, and a lot of questions that went unanswered. 👇

This series is my story of becoming a pelvic PT, and everything I wish I’d known sooner for my own pelvic health (and overall health).

Part 1: Bowel & Bladder Basics 🚽

Swipe through for the habits I had to unlearn, including one I swore by for years (hi, hovering 👋) that was actually working against me.

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and pelvic PT can help. Send us a DM or check the link in bio to get started. 💛

Thank you to Elmara | PNW Photographer for the photo and check out her work!!!

Did you know that not all lubricants are created equal?

Many personal lubricants contain ingredients that can irritate sensitive tissue, aren’t formulated with vaginal health in mind, or aren’t s***m-friendly. Choosing a lubricant designed for vaginal tissue can support comfort and healthy moisture. If you’re trying to conceive (TTC), a fertility-friendly lubricant can help support s***m motility.

Our recommendations:

Trying to conceive: Good Clean Love® BioGenesis Fertility Lubricant
For intimacy: Uberlube® — a premium silicone-based lubricant with exceptional glide
For intimacy or pelvic floor tools: Good Clean Love® water-based lubricants

Why use a lubricant?
✔️ Reduces discomfort during intimacy
✔️ Improves glide and decreases friction
✔️ Helps prevent tissue irritation
✔️ Supports vaginal tissue hydration

The right lubricant can make intimacy more comfortable while supporting your goals — whether that’s conceiving, improving comfort, or using pelvic health tools.

Have questions about which lubricant is right for you? We’d love to help.
