May 17. In the late afternoon, our ship moved to Mosquera Islet, located between Baltra and North Seymour. After a wet landing, we were left to walk along the beautiful sandy beach among the many lounging resident sea lions. After a hard day of swimming and looking to catch fish, the sea lions just like to sleep on the beach and catch some rays! Swipe to see some of my iPhone videos of them looking for just the right spot to flop!

Here are some shots that show off the topography of San Cristobal Island with its’ rugged, wind-carved landscape, where, in addition to the Bo***es, we saw Brown Pelicans, Sea lions, Frigatebirds and more.

May 17 — Santa Cruz Island, Cerro Dragon:
We began the day with an early morning panga ride and dry landing on Santa Cruz Island, where we took an uphill trail to a lookout point on Cerro Dragon (or Dragon Hill), named for a colony of land iguanas that inhabited the site in the 1970s. We saw Brown Pelicans ( photos 1-3), a Black-necked Stilt (4-6), Galapagos Mockingbird (7-8), Mangrove Yellow Warbler (9-11) and a Galapagos Flycatcher (12).

There are 7 species of Lava Lizards recorded in the Galapagos. This one is the Floreana Lava Lizard. They are small reptiles with long tapering tails, slim bodies and pointed heads. Their toes are long and pointed, unlike geckos. Unlike geckos they are active during the day.

Another of the fledglings was across the way in the hydrangeas struggling to get to the top of the Hydrangea flower. He finally made it but was then knocked of by either a Starling or a Catbird. I didn’t see him after he fell but later we noticed another fledgling sitting on a chain in the garden across the way. I’m hoping that was him. See last two photos. Also swipe for a video of his struggle and calls.

One of the fledgling Baltimore Orioles at the Heather Garden yesterday was feeling his oats and even showed off his flying skills (swipe to last shot). All the while he was calling out either to his parents or his siblings. See next post for a video.

A Galapagos Flycatcher posed nicely for me on our late afternoon hike on Punta Cormorant. Another familiar-looking bird in an unfamiliar setting.

Look who I saw in the Galapagos? Very similar looking to the Yellow Warblers that we see during Spring migration in NYC. On a hike at Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island I saw this Mangrove Yellow Warbler! Or, it could be a Northern Yellow Warbler.

More from May 16 morning: After “mailing” our postcards, we then had a chance to go back to the beach and snorkel off the beach. I had a magical snorkel swimming with a sea turtle as it fed on the reef. Only negative was my close encounter with a sharp piece of lava rock on the only day I chose not to wear protective leggings! But the turtle made it worth it!
