We lost our sweet Maple girl this morning to colic.
She went to horsey heaven with grass in her mouth and treats in her belly.
Maple was one of the first horses I had at CoComeau. She was there with me for each step of our journey, even giving Lucia her first pony ride as she gave so many of our students at CoComeau their first ride too.

She will be greatly missed as we remember all the times......... she taught kids how to canter, rocked her unicorn forelock, was painted for camp year after year, bucked her riders off in the field and bolted home, stood in the wheelbarrow while her stall was cleaned, gave therapy rides to so many kids, left the arena to eat grass during lessons, trotted into paddocks with kids during lessons, bossed Berkley around in the paddock, was so incredibly patient with so many kids while they learned how to brush and pick feet...... she certainly made some sturdy riders here!

Thank you Maple for all the lessons you taught us over the years. Cheers to Maple

2026 Show Season kicked off at this past week, and my riders all made me extremely proud! We celebrated a lot of wonderful FIRSTs!

⭐️Meera’s first show with Jecko 😍
⭐️Meredith’s 1st place in her EQ class
⭐️ Ainsley’s first show with Tic Tac and piloting his first hunter course!
⭐️And of course BABY Harrie’s first show - huge thank you and !!!!

Let’s talk about Strangles. And no… we don’t mean strangling Dr. George for scheduling things by himself. 😅

Yes, Strangles is a very serious matter when it comes to horses. BUT — it has also been around for a very long time. Most horses have likely been exposed at some point in their lives and may not have even shown symptoms.

Strangles is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi. Symptoms can include:
• High fever (104–106°F)🤒
• Thick nasal discharge🤧
• Abscessed lymph nodes under the jaw, which can restrict breathing (this is how it got the name “strangles”)

It is commonly spread through direct horse-to-horse contact or contaminated equipment.

⚠️ As of April 2026, Strangles is now a reportable disease in New Hampshire. ⚠️

Treatment generally includes:
• Isolation for 3–4 weeks😷
• Supportive care
• Hot packing abscess areas
• Antibiotics only in severe cases, since they can sometimes interfere with the development of natural immunity💉

There is a strangles vaccine available to help reduce the likelihood and severity of disease, but it is not 100% effective.

Most horses recover within 3–4 weeks. However, complications can occur, including:
• “Bastard strangles” (spread of infection internally)
• Permanent guttural pouch infections

These complications occur in a smaller percentage of cases, but they can be serious.

Prognosis:
• Good to excellent recovery in most horses within 2–4 weeks😍
• Mortality rate is LESS THAN 10%
• Bastard strangles can be fatal (very rare)

As serious as this infection can be, we need to reduce panic and support one another in keeping our equine community safe.

If your horse lives at home with limited exposure, the risk is generally low. If you attend organized events:
• Disinfect your horse’s area
• Avoid nose-to-nose contact with unfamiliar horses
• Do not share feed or water buckets
• Do not travel if your horse is sick or showing symptoms

Be cautious, stay informed, and most importantly🫶🏼 be kind. We are all in this together, and we will get through this together too. 🐴

Have you met Ryann? She’s our Trainer Spotlight this week! We are so fortunate she’s joined our team! 🤩🐴💪🏻

Ryann Lacagnina has been passionate about horses since her first lesson at five years old and built her career through extensive hands-on experience; riding and competing across equitation, hunters, equitation, jumpers, dressage, and eventing disciplines. By age ten she was working in exchange for lessons and soon became a dedicated working student, assisting in the daily care of large boarding and lesson program at The Southlands Foundation, in Rhinebeck, NY.

She progressed from working student to assistant barn manager of a 50-plus horse boarding, lesson, and show facility where she helped coordinate daily operations, monitored horse health, rehabilitated program horses, taught beginner lessons; supervised and educated working students.

Ryann developed a specialization for improving green and challenging horses, but also provides professional training from freshly started to Intermediate 2. She has supported riders at Hunter/Jumper and Event competitions as well as Dressage CDIs in NY and FL. Ryann has regularly schooled horses at the upper levels, including 1.30m over fences, and is currently schooling PSG on her personal horse. She’s also continuing her education in biomechanics and sport psychology!

Founder of Ryann Alexandra Equestrian in 2021 and a University of New Hampshire graduate, Ryann also served as an adjunct lecturer and instructor at UNH during the 2024–2025 academic year, mentoring students in both classroom and practical equine settings. She creates individualized lessons and training programs for each horse and rider, emphasizing trust, confidence, and overall well-being.

Ryann is small but mighty and a huge asset to our growing barn family. Say hello anytime 👋 and if you’re lucky enough you’ll get to meet her Irish Setter Everly too!
