In 1982, a chiropractor sent his entire practice to classical Pilates — and never looked back. Dr. Howard Sichel found what decades of adjustments couldn't fix: weak abdominals are behind most back and hip pain. Classical Pilates teaches the body to heal itself through core connection, neutral pelvis, and real spinal support. Every client starts at the beginner level, no matter their fitness history — because the method itself is the genius.

Footwork on the reformer should feel powerful through your legs, not pinched in your knees. Swipe through for three adjustments we cue often in class: stack the knee over the ankle, press through the whole foot (not just the toes), and let the carriage move slower than you think it should. Small shifts, big difference in how your joints feel the next day. Save this breakdown and try it at your next session.

Myth: 'core work' means crunching your way to a six-pack. Fact: in classical Pilates, your Powerhouse is a deep system — transversus abdominis, pelvic floor, diaphragm, and the small stabilizers along your spine — that switches on before your limbs ever move. That's why one slow, controlled Roll-Up teaches your body more than a hundred crunches ever could. Save this to remember the difference before your next class.

Lateral thoracic breathing: the cue that changes everything. Most people breathe into the chest or belly and lose core connection the moment they move. In classical Pilates, we breathe wide into the sides and back of the ribcage, keeping the deep abdominals engaged the entire time. It sounds subtle, but it's the difference between a Hundred that shakes your neck and one that feels controlled from your center. Try it seated: hands on your ribs, inhale sideways into your palms, exhale and feel the ribs knit down and in. Small shift, big difference in how every exercise feels. Save this for your next class.

If your low back or hip flexors start burning during Leg Circles, the deep abdominals have handed off the work before the movement even begins. The pelvis should stay quiet while the leg draws its circle — that stillness is the actual exercise. Three cues to reset it: press the low back gently into the mat before you move, keep the circle small enough that the hip bones don't rock, and exhale as the leg crosses center to reconnect the deep core. Classical Pilates rewards precision over range — a smaller, controlled circle from a stable center will always outperform a big one powered by the hip flexors. Try this at your next class and notice the difference in how your core feels afterward.

Rib cage closure is the cue that changes everything about your Hundred. If your ribs pop up and flare as your arms pump, your deep abdominals disengage and the load shifts straight into your low back. The fix starts before you lift your head: exhale fully, feel your lower ribs knit down and in, then curl up only as far as that connection holds. In our small group classes we can see this the moment it happens and correct it in real time — that's the difference four students per class makes. Try this cue at home and notice how much steadier your Hundred feels.

Neutral spine is one of the most misunderstood cues in the room. It doesn't mean pressing your back flat into the mat — it means preserving the natural curves of your spine so it can support you evenly through every exercise. Flattening actually removes the shock absorption your lumbar curve is built for, which is why some clients feel more strain, not less, when they force a flat back. In classical Pilates, we work to find that supported neutral so the deep core can do its job and the spine stays protected, whether you're on the mat or the reformer. Save this one — it's worth revisiting the next time you set up for footwork or the Hundred.
