When you brace properly, you create 360° intra-abdominal pressure around your spine. The belt enhances that pressure.

More pressure = more stability
More stability = better force transfer

Instead of losing energy through a soft or unstable torso, you’re able to direct more of that force into the bar. That’s why you’ll often see an immediate difference in how a heavy squat or deadlift feels with a belt on.

But here’s the part most people miss, a belt is not a replacement for core strength.

If you don’t know how to brace without a belt, adding one won’t fix that. It just amplifies what’s already there. That’s why most of your training should still be done beltless, so you actually build that foundation.
